Harlem Hospital Center has been a bedrock of the Harlem community since 1887. Duties & Responsibilities

The Staff Nurse in the Behavioral Health Department has skills and competence in Nursing and works within the scope of regulatory agency standards and policies and procedures as set forward by HHC and Harlem Hospital.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Performs nursing skills and interventions efficiently, safely, consistently and cost-effectively.
  • Identifies and treats responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques, such as, case findings, health teaching, health counseling and the provision of care supportive to restorative life and well-being.
  • Accurately records nursing process and observations in a clear, concise manner.
  • Demonstrates caring compassionate and non-judgmental attitude towards patients
  • Demonstrates the ability to establish rapport with patients in respectful and supportive manner.
  • Effectively utilizes the electronic, as well as, the paper medical record.
  • Demonstrates cultural sensitivity and knowledge of the impact of gender, race, ethnicity, asexual orientation, income, etc. on treatment goals and strategies of behavior change.
  • Demonstrates respect for personal values and belief systems of individuals served.
  • Identifies patient/family learning needs (age appropriate) and teaches appropriate principles and procedures related to care.
  • Evaluates patient/family responses and effectiveness of nursing interventions.
  • Identifies individual needs, abilities and learning preferences and methods of addressing.
  • Demonstrates understanding and knowledge of the stages of change.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of reproductive health, prenatal and postnatal care and parenting skills.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of relapse prevention techniques
  • Demonstrates knowledge of rehabilitation and self-help.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C, and TB harm reduction, testing and counseling, and confidentiality requirements.
  • Demonstrates awareness of program's/unit's admission criteria
  • Demonstrates understanding of substance abuse continuum of care.


Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).

Special Note:

For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
