Duties & Responsibilities

Critical Care nursing is a complex, challenging area of nursing practice where clinical expertise is developed over time by integrating critical care knowledge, clinical skills, and caring practices. The Registered Professional Nurse is an integral member of the healthcare team. He or She follows the nursing process in (Assessing, Planning, Implementing, and Evaluating) all care provided to their assigned patients. Documents the care provided and demonstrates professional competence that is established by NYC H+H, and Harlem Hospital Standards of Care.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • The Critical Care Nurse must be proficient in the care of adult patients with critical care nursing requirements including telemetry and hemodynamic stability.
  • The RN role includes initial and ongoing physical and psychosocial assessment/ reassessment to determine the patients nurse care needs via the synthesis of data from various assessments, problem identification, care planning, monitoring, and evaluation and care planning, monitoring and evaluation of the patient.
  • The RN is actively involved in the following patient concepts of care: Support systems; strengths/areas for growth, advocacy, discharge planning and collaboration with the other healthcare providers optimize wellness and comfort.
  • The RN will also give immediate attention and response to critical events and assess, plan, implement, and evaluate the patient's experience with pain.
  • The Critical Care RN escalates clinical situation and or problems to their supervisor in a timely manner.
  • The Critical Care RN is expected to communicate timely and efficiently with all members of the interdisciplinary team, as well as positively impact the patient and family experience.


Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).

Special Note:

For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
