Job Description

Purpose of Position:

Under the general supervision of the Head Nurse/Nurse Manager, a staff nurse assigned to the Emergency Department provides age-appropriate professional nursing care including, triaging, assessment, planning, problem identification, care implementation, and evaluation of care of patients of all ages and population groups.

Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Quickly and accurately assess patient care needs
  • Work collaboratively with doctors and staff to provide exceptional care
  • Perform requested diagnostic tests (POC urine, blood glucose, Covid testing and swabbing)
  • Manage multiple cases simultaneously, prioritizing needs continually
  • Comply with all legal and safety requirements at all times
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and organized work environment
  • No food and drink in clinical area
  • No cellphone uses in clinical area
  • Work at maximum efficiency without compromising quality of care
  • Abide by all hospital rules and regulations
  • Act in a composed and professional manner, especially under pressure
  • Provide follow up care instructions to patients and make necessary referrals
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient charts
  • Attend all required training and continuing education events
  • Collects and labels specimens at the point of care using two patient identifiers
  • Provides timely interventions to identified problems in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team
  • Re-assesses patients' needs to determine patients' response to treatment and promptly confer with physician.
  • Manages medications according to established policy, using appropriate age specific techniques and devices; demonstrates venipuncture/peripheral IV insertion skills.
  • Utilizes available technology and equipment i.e. life support systems, invasive/ noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring s stems in providing patient care.
  • Transports the critically ill patients to the unit and communicates significant findings to receiving staff using appropriate handoff technique.
  • Performs venipuncture and peripheral intravenous access consistent with training guidelines.
  • Complies with COBRA/EMTALA, Child Abuse/Neglect, Violence/Rape/Elder Abuse management
  • Demonstrates knowledge of special screening requirement: depression, ligature, Alcohol (CAGE)
  • Participates in Unit Performance Improvement activities
  • Conforms to regulatory agency standards that guide care in the assignment specialty
  • Demonstrates commitment to continued professional development, including Specialty Board Certification.


Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Special Note:
For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
