Job Description
• Verifies patient identification by utilizing two unique patient identifiers.
• Orients patients/families/significant other to the environment upon arrival.
• Confirms patient has appropriately completed informed consent for scheduled procedure and
anesthesia/sedation
• Performs nursing assessment and risk assessment to include:
o Current mental and physical status
o Skin integrity as needed
o Pain assessment
o Understanding of scheduled procedure
o Appropriate preparation, i.e. NPO
o Weigh as indicated
o Monitor patient's vital signs pre, intra and post procedure as indicated according to hospital policy/procedure/protocol
o Provide peripheral venous access as needed.
o Provide intravenous maintenance and site care including patency of IV and safe use of delivery pump (i.e. IV AC, IMED)
o Review and follow up on laboratory values
• Reviews medical record including past and previous medical conditions, allergies and other pertinent information
• Administers prescribed medications, contrast media and treatments in accordance with hospital policy and procedure following appropriate age specific techniques and devices.
• Demonstrates clinical competence for:
o Cardiac monitoring
o Hemodynamic monitoring
o Airway management
o Venipuncture and IV therapy (including pumps)
o Sedation
o Pulse Oximetry
o PICC lines
o Filters
o Biopsies
o Specialized procedures, i.e. angiograms, angioplasty, CT, MRI
• Prepares room for specified procedure as per established hospital policy and procedure.
• Assists with safe transport and positioning of the patient
• Comply with facility specific Infection Control policy and procedure to prevent and control infections in the radiology department, i.e. aseptic technique
• Documents all nursing assessments, procedures, teaching, observations, patient response and other pertinent information in the medical record
• Identifies and evaluates needs of patient/family/significant other
• Assists physicians and technologists with procedures and diagnostic tests
• Explains, involves and instructs patient and/or family/significant other concerning therapeutic regimen, pre and post procedure care in accordance with age appropriate perspective.
• Post procedure follows up as needed
• Communicates patient's status with receiving unit RN.
• Ensures safe and secure patient and staff environment; free of hazard
• Knowledgeable of appropriate use of radiologic equipment/supplies
• Follows established policies/protocols/procedures of Radiology department
• Knowledgeable of hazardous materials including appropriate disposal used in Radiology department
• Participates in orientation of new staff members
• Informs appropriate supervisor of occurrences/incidents involving patient, visitors or staff.
• Maintains knowledge of trends/practices in Radiology nursing through ongoing education process and competency validation
• Acts as a resource for radiological procedures including implants
• Participates in unit performance improvement activities
• Facilities patient flow to and from the Radiology suite
• Appropriately delegates patient care activities to support staff and assures follow through
• Collaborates with multidisciplinary team in providing patient care services.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
2. Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Special Note:
For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
