Job Summary:
The Kacar Lab (ancientbiology.org) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Department of Bacteriology is looking to hire a Scientist to join our origins of life and early life evolution research group. Our lab works at the interface of evolution, synthetic biology, cellular biology and origins of life and is host to one of the NASA centers dedicated to understanding early Earth biology and evolution.

The Staff Scientist - Kacar Lab's (Scientist I) focus will be on molecular microbiology and molecular genetics focusing on cyanobacteria, specifically cloning, genomic manipulation, microscopy as well as other related experiments, along with conducting research on the origins and evolution of biomolecular systems both using in-vivo and in-vitro systems. The Staff Scientist will assist graduate student training, participate and present during laboratory as well as collaborator meetings, participate in data organization, presentation and manuscript writing. Additionally, the Staff Scientist will assist maintain an organized lab, and may assist in laboratory purchase ordering as well as inventory maintenance and management as needed.

Responsibilities: Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.
  • 20% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • 20% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • 15% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • 10% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • 20% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
  • 15% Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area

Qualifications:
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
At least two (2) years of research experience in a laboratory setting with experience in cyanobacterial genetics and microscopy, as well as advanced skills in molecular biology and biochemistry.
- Familiarity with computational tools.
- Excellent organization and project management skills.
- Proven strong communication skills, both oral and written.
- Proficient use of computer software such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Must be able to use internet browsers, e-mail, electronic calendaring, and familiarity with e-commerce vendors and online ordering systems.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A well-qualified candidate will also possess:
- Demonstrated high standards of professionalism, efficiency, discretion, initiative and independent judgment.
- Ability to prioritize a wide range of issues and to set and meet deadlines.
- Ability to train lab members.
- Experience working with diverse teams, willingness to work collaboratively and working independently, as needed; commitment to contributing a large, dynamic research group.

It is anticipated this position requires work be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location.

Depending on Qualifications
Title minimum $47,857;range selected is based on title median in division of $67,600 (47 samples). Range of $60k to $72k allows for range of experience and lab's funding available.
