Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Structural Engineer to take control of their career potential in our Upper Midwest Region. This position will partner with a multi-discipline team to develop designs of electrical substations to support the safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Opportunities may include, but not limited to:
  • Thinking creatively to address the complex challenges faced by municipal, cooperative, and investor-owned utilities, developers, and other transmission asset owners.
  • Perform structural design of projects from the conceptual phase through design completion.
  • Performing rigid bus analysis and the design of electrical substation steel structures, equipment foundations, structure foundations and secondary oil containment.
  • Providing support for our clients during construction.
  • Performing field inspections and compliance documentation.
  • Leading a team of single- or multi-discipline professionals to ensure project success.
  • Presenting designs and proposals to clients, permitting authorities, public interest groups, etc.
  • Corresponding and/or meeting with clients, contractors, and vendors.
  • Participating in project proposal efforts.
  • Performing quality control reviews for other engineers and designers.
  • Develop innovative processes, tools and design solutions.
  • Advancing into leadership roles.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Three (3) years of structural engineering experience, consulting preferred. Master of Science degree in structural engineering may be substituted for one (1) year experience.
  • Ability to work methodically and analytically in a dynamic, quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Strong knowledge in standard structural engineering techniques and principles.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Risa3D, STAAD, Mathcad, Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Engineers in Training-EIT Certification Preferred
