The Center for Clinical Arts, Skills, and Experiential Learning (CCASEL- pronounced castle) is the clinical simulation center for the Tilman J. Fertitta Family College of Medicine (TJFFCOM) at the University of Houston. CCASEL facilitates various modalities of clinical simulation training for medical students including human-based simulation activities, technology (high-fidelity manikin) based simulation, and procedural/clinical skills training. The Standardized Patient (SP) Coordinator will report to and is primarily responsible for assisting the SP Manager with facilitating and training Standardized Patients for human-based clinical simulation activities at CCASEL. Additionally, this position will assist in administrative and logistical functions at CCASEL, including, but not limited to simulation training activity set up and breakdown, student attendance management, SP quality assurance, facilitating simulation activities, and serving as an SP for simulation activities occasionally.
  1. Identify appropriate SPs for specific events based on case criteria and demographic. Coordinate the booking of SPs for specific events, including sending availability requests and booking confirmations and scheduling training sessions.
  2. Train the standardized patients and provide feedback on their performance in collaboration with the Standardized Patient Program Manager.
  3. Work with simulation leadership to develop custom training materials per case per event. Deliver training to SPs on case performance, checklist grading, and provision of verbal and written feedback. Implements dry runs or rehearsals with the standardized patients prior to the event.
  4. Provide oversight and monitoring of SPs and quality assurance during simulation events.
  5. Review checklist ratings and SP performance in event videos for quality assurance of future events.
  6. Beta-test or role play new cases prior to events for quality assurance.
  7. Provide backup acting capabilities, when necessary, which includes learning/training for multiple cases.
  8. Prepare exam rooms for simulation events including restocking supplies and rearranging furniture to suit the event's needs.
  9. Maintain SP database.
  10. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

This position requires18 months of further education beyond High School level and 6 months of job-related experience being a Standardized Patient Coordinator or working in clinical simulation centers.

Education: Requires specialized training in basic trades, principles, procedures, practice, **routines or techniques in a specific area or trade which might normally be acquired through up to 18 months of education or training beyond the high school level. Vocational competence in the operation of mechanical or electronic equipment may be required.Experience: Requires a minimum of six (6) months of directly job-related experience.
