The University of Virginia is seeking a Standardized Patient (SP) Educator to work in the Clinical Skills Center (CSC) as a part of the Clinical Performance Education Center (CPEC) team at the School of Medicine.

The UVA School of Medicine serves as a national model for excellence through innovation and collaboration to educate and train physicians to provide patient-centered care, practice evidence-based medicine, and engage in lifelong learning. The CSC is an educational and assessment resource designed to support the learning objectives of the School of Medicine. Based in the CPEC, the CSC recruits and trains SPs for instructional and assessment exercises.

Standardized Patient Educator Responsibilities include:

Case Development
  • Collaborate with Objective Structured Clinical Skills Exam (OSCE) committee and faculty to provide input on new case development, analyze existing cases for improvement, work with faculty case writers to revise existing and pilot cases, and maintain a comprehensive case database.
  • Follow established CSC protocols to create deliverable SP cases and training materials.
  • Work to ensure that Communication Checklists are reliable and valid in relation to student curriculum and exam objectives.
Educational and Assessment Event Planning and Implementation
  • Plan, coordinate, and execute educational and assessment events, including multiple OSCEs.
  • Follow established CSC protocols to create case-specific training materials including SP case documents, checklists, PowerPoint presentations, video examples, etc.
  • Perform quality assurance protocols and deliver constructive feedback to SPs.
  • Assist with the recruitment of SPs for events.
  • Schedule all SP training and create master event schedules.
Administrative Tasks
  • Perform tasks including training and event reminders, SP paysheet creation, update shared documents, event calendar review and management
  • Assist with the continued development and communication of CSC protocols and manuals.
  • Assist with interviewing potential SPs and make hiring recommendations.
  • Serve as a guide and resource for new SPs.
Other
  • Occasional evening and/or weekends required.
  • Ability to effectively work independently and as part of a team.
  • Capacity for flexibility and adaptability in a dynamic work environment.
  • Organization, planning, communication, and networking skills required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education: Bachelor's degree required. Additional experience will be required in lieu of a degree.
Experience: Two years of experience required with a Bachelor's degree. Six years of experience required with a High School degree or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in teaching, training, or medical simulation
  • CHSE certification desirable
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
