Experience and Education
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician Certification (CSPDT) or Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) required.
  • One (1) to three (3) years or greater experience handling/distributing medical/surgical instruments and equipment.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Broad knowledge base regarding medical/surgical instruments and equipment.
Job Duties
  • Unloads dirty case carts and prepares instruments, supplies, and equipment for decontamination. Decontaminates instruments, supplies, and equipment per manufacturer's instructions and departmental policies and procedures. Inspects decontaminated items for cleanliness and damages. Tests decontaminated items to ensure proper functioning prior to sterilization.
  • Handles items carefully and prevents damages to delicate instruments. Identifies broken, damaged instruments and malfunctioning equipment and removes from service. Communicates items removed from service to Central Sterile Processing Coordinator promptly.
  • Identifies proper method of sterilization per item to be sterilized. Prepares and assembles instruments, supplies, and equipment per proper method of sterilization. Selects and uses packaging and wrapping materials and container systems for method of sterilization and aseptic presentation. Ensures filters are assembled in container systems prior to sterilization.
  • Maintains thorough and accurate sterilization documentation and record keeping by maintaining permanent records and test results. Labels packages, items, and container systems to be sterilized with proper sterilization information and initials of preparer.
  • Operates various methods of sterilization. Sets correct cycle parameters and utilizes correct chemical process indicators per steam, sterrad, gas, or steris sterilization. Wears proper personnel protective equipment while on duty. Complies with departmental work patterns regarding work flow, air flow, and people flow.
  • Loads, operates, and unloads ultrasonic washer and washer sterilizer according to manufacturer's instructions. Prepares and uses disinfectants and chemicals according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Performs correct biological monitoring and testing per method of sterilization. Recognizes positive test results of biological monitoring and immediately re-challenges sterilizer. Communicates positive test results to healthcare team and declares method of sterilization unsafe for use.
  • Inspects and cleans steam sterilizers on routine basis. Performs daily Bowie-Dick testing of pre-vacuum sterilizers and diagnostic testing on steris machine prior to use each day.
  • Organizes and prioritizes processing tasks based on identified need. Performs processing duties in cost effective manner. Issues instruments, supplies, and equipment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities.
  • Serves as subject manner resource person and/or preceptor to new staff. Provides feedback and input for clinical performance evaluation form.
  • Communicates and utilizes proper telephone etiquette and speaks clearly. Conveys feeling of helpfulness and repeats caller's message to ensure proper communication. Gives complete attention to caller and hangs up last.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
Working Conditions

Constant walking, standing, bending, turning, and stooping. Pushing and pulling heavy objects. Must be able to lift 20 lbs., heavy boxes, and instrument sets. Demonstrate willingness to respond to all reasonable requests from supervisor in an appropriate and timely manner. Any qualifications to be considered as equivalents in lieu of stated minimums require prior approval of the Vice President for Human Resources Administration, or his/her designee.
