Oversees, leads, and participates in the activities of an assigned crew responsible for performing general street and drainage maintenance for the City of Bryan.
Essential Job Functions
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
Texas Class A or B commercial driver's license with a good driving record as measured by the City's evaluation system, or the ability to obtain a CDL within the timeframe set by the department.
Physical Demands
Physical demands include but are not limited to: sitting, standing, walking, talking, hearing, seeing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing, pulling, climbing, using hands and fingers to operate a variety of equipment and machines, driving, and lifting/carrying objects up to 50 pounds.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an outdoor field environment. While in the field there will be exposure to inclement weather, temperature extremes, moving mechanical parts and equipment, rough/uneven terrain, noise, vibration, electrical hazards, toxic/caustic chemicals such as herbicides/pesticides, odors, fumes, and airborne particles such as dust, dirt, and pollen.
Equipment
Work shall be performed with tools, appliances and equipment approved by those agencies and bodies that have control, authority, or approval of the design working ranges or limitations of those items; the employee has the responsibility to conform to those ranges and limitations.
Equipment may include but is not limited to: phone, computer, backhoe, rubber tire loader, skid steer loader, steel wheel roller, pothole repair truck, 8 and 14 cubic yard dump trucks, vac-con truck, Menzi Muck and mini excavators.

Oversees, leads, and participates in the activities of an assigned crew responsible for performing general street and drainage maintenance for the City of Bryan.
Essential Job Functions
- Operates equipment such as backhoes, steel wheel rollers, skid steer loaders, excavators, rubber tire loaders, Gradalls, single man pothole patchers, 8 and 14 cubic yard dump trucks, vac-con trucks, and other departmental equipment as necessary to perform street and drainage maintenance.
- Leads and participates in work activities of assignment and/or assigned personnel ensuring that crew activities are conducted within scheduled time frames with materials and manpower utilized to the fullest capability.
- Responsible for tools, equipment, and uniforms assigned to the crew.
- Performs routine inspections and proper preventative maintenance of equipment; reports equipment problems and needs to Foreman.
- Reports personnel issues to Foreman and provides input for performance reviews of personnel.
- Responsible for job safety, crew efficiency, and communication with residents at the worksite.
- Participates in correction of operational and safety deficiencies; assists in enforcement of City and Department policies.
- Responds to and attempts to resolve citizen/customer complaints; acts as customer service contact.
- Communicates City ordinances and policies to team and residents in an effort to educate proper disposal procedures.
- Assesses on-site issues, makes appropriate decisions regarding the issues, and directs team and/or citizens to remedy the problem.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Responds regularly and promptly to work.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- At least five (5) years of experience involving light/heavy equipment operation.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Knowledge of:
- Operations, services, and activities of Streets & Drainage operations.
- Materials, methods, practices, and equipment used in Streets & Drainage operations.
- Plan, organize, assign, oversee and inspect the work of assigned crew/crews.
- Perform work independently based on broad instructions and general supervision.
- Perform moderate to heavy manual labor outdoors in temperature extremes for extended periods.
- Handle multiple tasks, prioritize and organize work assignments, and meet established deadlines.
- Safely and efficiently operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and materials used in performing essential functions.
- Efficiently operate a personal computer and utilize a variety of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and learn other established software applications as needed.
- Demonstrate good judgment and make decisions as to the appropriate actions to take in accordance with rules and regulations.
- Demonstrate satisfactory work performance and the initiative to broaden skills and take on new responsibilities.
- Demonstrate regular, reliable, and punctual attendance and utilize leave responsibly to ensure sufficient coverage of departmental operations.
- Ensure the maximum utilization of manpower, equipment, and supplies.
- Interpret, explain, and ensure compliance with City and department administrative directives, policies, and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with safety policies and the proper reporting and/or correction of safety hazards.
- Demonstrate satisfactory performance and regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
- Provide management with sound advice and information regarding incumbent's area of responsibility.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other City employees/departments, contractors, other entities, and the general public.
- Advanced proficiency in the use of all tools, equipment, and supplies related to job responsibilities.
- Demonstrated leadership skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong customer service skills, including the ability to handle escalated customer inquiries.
