The University of Virginia Division of Student Affairs invites applications for two Student Affairs Fellows. The Division consists of over 200 employees all working together, for and alongside students, to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known.

The Student Affairs Fellows are full-time positions created to provide professional staff experience in a fast-paced higher education environment to recent University graduates. As a staff member in the Division of Student Affairs, the Fellows work on programs and initiatives related to building community and belonging, while carrying out essential duties related to the activities of the unit or sub-unit in which they are hired into . Night and weekend work will be required , with the potential for a non-traditional (outside 8am-5pm) schedule.

Position #1 - Student Engagement

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Student Engagement, this position is responsible for coordinating and implementing a marketing and communications strategy which shares the story of the unit, encourages engagement in events/traditions by students, and helps connect students and student organizations to resources. This role will also support unit programming efforts in Newcomb Hall and 1515 on the Corner.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise up to two student employees which make up our Student Engagement Marketing Team.
  • Develop content and marketing materials in conjunction with team to promote Student Engagement and opportunities/events to students.
  • Create and implement a strategic marketing calendar with programmatic themes.
  • Manage all Student Engagement social media accounts.
  • Plan programs within the Student Engagement lounge ( PAC ) in Newcomb Hall.
  • Support all other Student Engagement programs , events , or special projects as needed.
P osition # 2 - Fraternity and Sorority Life

Reporting to the Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life , this position plays a crucial role in the advisement of the fraternity and Sorority community on Grounds. The role also helps with developing programming, tracking educational program participation, and marketing efforts.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with development of programs and initiatives that increase fraternity and sorority member engagement with Fraternity & Sorority Life (FSL) professional staff and the local Charlottesville community.
  • Advise the Order of Omega Greek Honor Society.
  • Co-advise one or more of the four Greek Councils and serve as a Chapter Liaison to several organizations across the FSL community.
  • Assist with tracking chapter participation in educational programs and leadership development opportunities.
  • Utilize social media as a means for publicity and information-sharing; inventiveness, creativity, and skilled use of Canva strongly preferred.
  • Potential supervision of FSL undergraduate Office Assistants who staff the front desk and assist with clerical and other FSL projects/tasks as needed.
  • Support all other FSL programs, events, or special projects as needed.
Other duties as assigned may include duties as assigned by supervisors, deans or senior VPSA (Vice President for Student Affairs) staff. Fellows will be expected to help with unforeseen priorities that emerge in the Division of Student Affairs unit where they are hired. Fellows may be asked to assist the agency or State government in an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Qualifications:

Candidates must have the following required knowledge areas, skills, and abilities:
  • A recent degree from UVA, or any other four - year college or u niversity , with 1-2 years of demonstrated student engagement , leadership , or related experience ( p art time during school or professional experience following graduation will be considered) .
  • Strong commitment to the division's core values of academic rigor, health and wellness, honor, public service , and student self-governance.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and belonging.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent operational and project management skills, including the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in prioritizing tasks, sharing information, and using independent judgment.
  • Ability to work in collaboration with cross-functional teams.
A competitive applicant for the Fellow positions will have many of the following preferred knowledge areas, skills, and abilities:
  • Ability to coordinate resources, evaluate information, and identify creative solutions.
  • Understanding of the University's educational mission, strategic aims, and programs.
  • Experience with event planning and coordination.
  • Experience and/or domain knowledge specific to the Student Affairs program in which the Fellow will work.
  • Implement measures to increase voter turnout, such as awareness campaigns and easier access to voting.
Physical Requirements:

These roles are primarily sedentary, however occasionally moving/lifting items more than 40 poun d s is necessary. All Fellow roles may work outside of the normal business day (8am-5pm) as well as nights and weekends as needed.

Position and Application Information:

These positions are term - limited with an anticipated start date in August of 2024 and a firm end date of June 30 th , 2025 . At the end of the appointment, the Fellow must submit a written summary report of accomplishments, including recommendations for current and future initiatives.

The non-negotiable salary for these roles is an annual equivalent of $43,888, or $844 per week. S elected applicant s will pass a background check.
