Summary

This position is located in the Division of Information Technology, in the Kansas City, MO, Dallas, TX, Braintree, MA, Atlanta, GA, or New York, NY Regional Office of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. Duties

As an information technology intern you'll get opportunities to utilize your current skills and develop new ones to handle the ever changing requirements of the Information technology industry. Under direction and supervision, the incumbent will participate in and/or independently perform the following:

Duties (CG-07):

  • Research and evaluate PC software and operating systems.
  • Prepares reports using Microsoft (MS) Office.
  • Assist clients in the use of standard MS applications.
  • Troubleshoot minor hardware and software configuration problems.
  • Participate in the deployment and assist in the management of IT assets and services within the assigned region.
  • Populate and maintain an automated call tracking system with client request data.


Duties (CG-09):

  • Research and evaluate PC software and operating systems.
  • Develop and test documented process related to new products or services.
  • Provide support to supervisor and staff on projects.
  • Participate in the deployment and assist in the management of IT assets and services within the region.
  • Assist clients in the use of standard MS applications.
  • Troubleshoot minor hardware and software configuration problems; gather, analyze, and evaluate basic information for input problem statements and feasibility studies which include analyses of customer requirements.
  • Populate and maintain an automated call tracking system with client request data.

After successful completion of the program requirements and based on FDIC's needs, the selectees may be non-competitively converted to a Term or Permanent position as an IT, CG-2210, based upon an evaluation of performance, completion of at least 480 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program. However, service in the FDIC Pathways Internship Program confers no right to further employment in the competitive or excepted service.

Qualifications

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic, religious spiritual; community; student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. To qualify at the CG-07 level, applicants must meet one of the following:

1. Experience: Applicants must have completed at least one year of specialized experience, as described below, equivalent to at least the 05 grade level or above in the Federal service. OR

2. Education: Completion of one full year of graduate level education in information technology, technology management, computer science, engineering, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, or other related field; OR

3. Superior Academic Achievement: Possession of a Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or other related field, AND eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement provisions. OR

4. Combinations of education and experience: Applicants must possess a combination of both education and specialized experience described above that together meet the qualification requirements for this position.

Specialized Experience for the CG-07: IT experience researching, analyzing and evaluating new technologies; preparing written reports using MS Office; and troubleshooting hardware and software configuration problems.

To qualify for SAA, applicants must have met one of the following:

Superior Academic Achievement: Superior academic achievement must have been gained in a major field of undergraduate study: computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management or other fields related to the position. Applicants qualifying under S.A.A. must have completed (or expect to complete within 9 months from the closing date of the announcement) all the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.

S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership.

  1. Class standing Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses.
  2. Grade-point average (G.P.A.) Applicants must have a grade-point average of:
    1. 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on their official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or
    2. 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum. Grade-point averages are to be rounded to one decimal place. For example, 2.95 will round to 3.0 and 2.94 will round to 2.9.
    3. Membership in a national scholastic honor society recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.


To qualify at the CG-09 level, applicants must meet one of the following:

1. Education: Completion of 2 academic years of graduate level education in information technology, technology management, computer science, engineering, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, or other related fields. OR Possession of a master's degree master's or equivalent graduate degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related, information technology, technology management, computer science, engineering, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, or other related fields.

2. Experience: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the grade 07 level in the Federal service.

3. Combinations of education and experience: Your current education completed is credited as a percentage of the education required for the grade level and your current experience is credited as a percentage of the total experience required for the grade level. The two percentages are added and must equal 100% in order to qualify for the desired grade level.

Specialized experience for the CG-09: Troubleshooting minor hardware and software problems; participating in deployments of IT equipment; and assisting in the management of IT assets and services.

NOTE: Prior to conversion to an Information Technology Specialist (2210 series), applicants must either have a degree in computer science, engineering, information science, information systems management, mathematics, operations research, statistics, or technology management, or a degree that provided a minimum of 24 semester hours in one or more of the fields identified above and required the development or adaptation of applications, systems or networks, or have IT-related experience. IT-related experience must demonstrate each of the four competencies listed below with a minimum of 1 year of specialized experience at the next lower GS/CG level or equivalent:

  1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.


Education

A participant must be accepted for enrollment or are enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution or accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a qualifying career or technical education program that awards a recognized postsecondary credential (such as a Registered Apprenticeship Program, Jobs Corps, AmeriCorps, and Peace Corps) on a full or half-time basis; have at least a cumulative (overall) 2.5 grade point average; and remain in good academic standing.
