Responsibilities

The Controller's Office offers career ladders for many of our positions which allow tenured employees promotional opportunities within their job. The successful candidate will be hired at the most appropriate level of Student Payment Specialist level I through IV, based on education and experience.

This position is located within the Student Finance area of the Florida State University Controller's Office.

The Student Payment Specialist is a member of a team focused on payments, waivers, scholarships, and other financial programs pivotal to student success. This role is responsible for general oversight of the cashiering functions of the Office of Student Finance and is responsible for the daily processing of departmental deposits, auxiliary payments, opening and closing of cash drawers, and the processing of transactions requiring additional review.

This role also provides guidance and oversight to a team of OPS and Work Study employees who handle basic administrative functions in the Office of Student Finance. These functions include mail and payment logging and distribution, cashiering, and the review and mailing of financial aid and other refund checks. The Student Payment Specialist provides general guidance for transaction processing and assists in the maintenance of student accounts as needed to facilitate payment.

This role is also responsible for reviewing interfaces with third party applications such as Transact, Transfermate, and Flywire to ensure that payments transmitted through these systems are recorded to student accounts and that payments appearing in the university's bank account are accurately recorded.

Finally, this role may assist in other areas of the payments team during peak business periods by assisting in the coding, logging and processing of scholarships, the review and application of waivers, and by answering incoming customer services requests by phone or email.

Other duties and projects may be assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; or a high school diploma or equivalent and experience equal to four years. (Note: post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to develop and implement policies, procedures, goals, and objectives.
  • Experience accurately applying payments, reviewing accounts receivable ledgers, or working in a cash handling environment.
  • Ability to communicate accurately, thoroughly, and professionally (verbal and written).
  • Experience using accounting/financial enterprise resource planning systems (such as PeopleSoft/OMNI or comparable systems).
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting financial information, reports, data, and information.
  • Knowledge of related federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, rules and regulations; ability to apply related university policies, procedures, principles, and practices.

Anticipated Salary Range

The anticipated starting salary for this position is $44,056.80, commensurate with education and experience.
