Summary

This position is located in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Pacific West Area (PWA), Honey Bee Research Unit (HBRU) located in Tucson, AZ.

This is a Pathways Intern, excepted service position expected to last more than 1 year. The position's end date is based on funding. If intern obtains his/her degree before funding ends, they may be eligible for non-competitive conversion to a term appointment.

Clarification from the agency

Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program. Duties

  • Assists with honey bee colony management and experiments in field, cage, or in-vitro laboratory settings, including sample collection and dissection.
  • Works with specialized laboratory equipment and methods for microbiology: microscopy, spectrophotometry, incubators, biological cabinets, autoclaves, anaerobic chambers, and centrifuges, etc.
  • Collects, and maintains detailed records of experimental data, sample collections, and analytical results.
  • Utilizes basic principles of statistical analysis (e.g., variation, sample size, biological vs. technological replicates, etc.) to interpret and summarize analytical results.
  • Tabulates, statistically analyzes, and summarizes data using personal computers and software packages (e.g., MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, NCBI Blast, BioEdit, Mothur, JMP, R, SAS).
  • Performs full range of molecular and microbiology laboratory techniques to identify, monitor, maintain and experimentally manipulate pathogenic and beneficial microbes of importance to honey bee health.

PATHWAYS ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
  • All applicants must be currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a student on at least a half-time schedule at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.
  • Applicants must be seeking the correct degree level (diploma, certificate, etc.) and be in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 or equivalent) throughout the duration of their program.
  • The student's academic goals must be related to the duties of this position.

OPM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS AT THE GS-06 GRADE LEVEL

Education: Qualifying education at the GS-06 level is defined as the completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education related to the position being filled.

Examples of qualifying degrees,molecular biology, microbiology, entomology, and/or insect science and associated coursework.

Physical Demands

The work requires some physical exertions, such as regular and recurring walking or bending. In many situations the duration of the activity (e.g., continuous testing of samples) contributes to the arduous nature of the job. In other situations, there may be special requirements for agility or dexterity such as exceptional hand/eye coordination.

Work Environment

The work requires moderate risks or discomforts which require special safety precautions, e.g., working around moving parts, machines, with irritant chemicals, bacteria, or obnoxious odors. The incumbent is required to use protective clothing or gear such as masks, gowns, goggles, gloves.

  • Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing (at least a 2.0 GPA,each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment.
  • Upon completion of all program requirements, Pathways Interns may be converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all their education; however, conversion is not guaranteed.
  • The full performance level (FPL) of the position to which converted may be up to the GS-07 level.
  • This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. This position may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
