Summary

This position is part of the WAPA-SNR-Sierra Nevada Region, Department of Energy. As a Student Trainee (Engineering), you will provide support to projects and other engineers involved in the Engineering disciplines within Western Area Power Administration (WAPA).

**This is not a remote position. The selectee will be required to be physically present at the Folsom, CA duty location.**

Duties

As a Student Trainee (Engineering) at the full performance level, you will:

  • Under the guidance of senior engineers, perform duties which are designed to provide experience in applying power system engineering theories and basic principles to accomplish non-complex tasks.
  • Assist senior engineers on various aspects of engineering projects such as, performing research, and collecting technical data, performing power system studies, developing study reports, and presentation materials.
  • Assist senior engineers in developing, maintaining, and updating transmission system models and generation models to be used for powerflow and transient stability studies.
  • Review existing Operations and Planning documentation to develop an understanding of WAPA roles and functions.
  • Apply power system engineering principles to assist senior engineers in the development of study cases and contingency files to be used to simulate various system conditions to be studied.
  • Work with senior engineers to become familiar with software applications and FERC/NERC/WECC compliance standards that are used for conducting power system operations and power grid planning studies.
  • Under the guidance of senior engineers, perform power flow and dynamic stability studies in support of ongoing projects and operation.


Requirements

  • Must be a student, accepted for enrollment or enrolled, and seeking a degree or certificate in a qualifying educational institution on at least a half-time basis.
  • Must be in good academic standing and a minimum GPA of 2.0
  • Must be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • This employer participates in the e-Verify program.
  • Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Suitable for Federal employment, as determined by a background investigation.
  • Interns will be on a trial period for the duration of the appointment.
  • A Pathways Internship Participant Agreement is required.


Qualifications

GS-03: To qualify, you must have completed 1 full academic year of post-high school study. (1 full academic year is equivalent to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.)

OR

Have 6 months of general experience.

OR

Have a combination of both education and general work experience.

GS-04: To qualify, you must have completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study OR an associate degree. (1 full academic year is equivalent to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.)

OR

Have 1 year of general work experience.

OR

Have a combination of both education and general work experience.

You must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

Appointment is not to exceed (NTE) 1-year and may be extended until Pathways requirements are complete.
