General Description

Responsible for planning school bus routes and assigning students to buses utilizing manual methods and/or the Department computerized routing system. Responsible for creating and assigning routes to students for their safe transportation to and from school and school activities within established regulations and guidelines.

**Minimum and maximum salary scale listed; contracted salary depends on experience.

Essential Job Functions

Essential Job Functions :
  • Analyzes data pertaining to vehicle capacity, timing, road systems, and safety concerns in order to develop school bus routes and schedules;
  • Assists with establishing and monitoring bus routes, including special programs; adjusts routes as necessary during the school year; field tests schedules and routes; determines mileage of routes;
  • Solves issues such as overcrowding on buses or balancing loads to meet bell schedules;
  • Works with Department staff to solve challenging bus assignment issues, such as routing for all students including students with special needs, specialty programs, McKinney-Vento or out-of-zone students;
  • Reviews bus stop review requests and processes approved or denied requests appropriately;
  • Uses the routing and mapping software to answer questions and to plan and adjust school bus routes and stops; maintains transportation routes on the web site;
  • Maintains forms and reports used for bus stop and student bus assignment information;
  • Obtains, gathers, and organizes pertinent data as needed and input into a usable form utilizing word processing and spreadsheet software;
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with the public, school staff, parents, and personnel from other departments or agencies;
  • Maintains records of routes, drivers, mileage, daily reports, etc.; prepares reports as necessary; assists supervisor with filing and preparing reports and distributing information;
  • Assists with special projects to analyze changes in bell schedules and school zone attendance boundaries;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Report Preparation :

Collects data and prepares monthly reports regarding students, routes, buses, miles and programs; prepares other routing related reports, as requested.

Equipment Operation :

Office equipment such as computer, printer, adding machine, copier, fax, multi-line telephone and radio communication.

Contacts :
Daily contact with area transportation office staff and school staff.

Work Direction :

Provides direction to drivers related to bus stops, routes, schedule changes and other work as directed by the supervisor.

Supervision :

Consults with Area Managers in resolving bus stop and route related issues.

The incumbent regularly works in an office environment. The noise level is quiet to moderate.

Qualifications

Working knowledge of transportation planning, scheduling and operations, county geography and office procedures; safe and defensive driving methods and first aid procedures including CPR. Some knowledge of personnel policies, including confidentiality; state and local school bus operation laws and regulations. Working skill in the use of a personal computer, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, mapping and routing, and web-based route posting; accident protocol and reporting procedures. Demonstrated ability to operate a large vehicle safely and punctually in all weather conditions; to work effectively with drivers, children, parents and staff. Demonstrated ability to work under stressful conditions or emergencies and to plan, organize and work independently; to assist with training others. Demonstrated ability to analyze data, establish efficient routes and identify and correct problems.
Requirements

Valid Driver's License. Training in commercial driving or holder of a Commercial Driver license (CDL) preferred. This position requires the incumbent to drive occasionally to test routes. In accordance with Policy 5431, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned a district-owned or leased motor vehicle will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy. First aid and CPR courses; Defensive Driving Course. Meets physical qualifications for school bus drivers. Successful completion of state-approved school bus driver training course.
