The Role
A key technical member of a cross functional team that focuses on deploying stationary storage opportunities with cutting edge technologies. The role requires a strong understanding of transformer design to assess tradeoffs of value engineering initiatives at a system level. You will be responsible for optimizing the design and integration of medium voltage and high voltage electrical equipment that enable Tesla storage products to connect to the grid.

Responsibilities
  • Interface with internal product design engineers and external vendors to ensure we are optimizing our products and the balance of plant electrical equipment necessary for our storage products to connect to the grid at medium and high voltages. Initial focus will be on optimizing medium voltage transformers for Tesla product applications and value engineering solutions with internal engineers and external partners
  • This role will be a key driver in identifying, gathering, quantifying inputs into new product development and existing product optimization
  • Align with internal and external design, manufacturing, sourcing, and commercial strategies to ensure a deep understanding of tradeoffs of value engineering initiatives


Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Electromagnetics Engineering, relevant experience in power engineering field, or equivalent
  • At least 2 years of professional experience as lead design engineer for medium voltage or high voltage transformers (minimum 33kV and up to 2XXkV class and 2,500kVA minimum) with a deep understanding of electromagnetics, thermals, materials, component selection, and transformer design software
  • At least 5 years of professional experience as mechanical, manufacturing, R&D or systems test engineer
  • At least 2 years of professional experience with OPS or other medium voltage transformer design software
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of time to work closely with internal and external manufacturing teams
  • Demonstrated experience in liaising between multiple stakeholders with conflicting interests and developing solutions clearly identifying trade-offs
  • Experience managing products from conceptual design to implementation with a strong focus on reducing costs through engineering principles, manufacturing processes or vendor negotiations
