Substitute Instructional Assistant (Exceptional Student Education)

JOB GOAL

Responsible for assisting the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) teacher(s) in providing a well-organized, smoothly functioning educational environment in which students with cognitive, physical, communication and emotional disabilities can take full advantage of the instructional program and available resources, under the direct supervision of a Highly Qualified Teacher.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by individuals assigned to this position. These statements are not intended to be construed as an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities required of those in this position.

  • Assist students during teacher-directed whole group, small group, and individualized instruction.
  • Monitor and support students during independent work or cooperative learning activities.
  • Provide follow-up and review after teacher-directed instruction.
  • Support students’ instructional programs through the preparation of educational materials and perform clerical tasks associated with instructional activities.
  • Aid with supervision of students in specific school settings (e.g., playground, lunchroom, and media center).
  • Assist in implementing the goals and objectives of the students’ Individual Educational Plans (IEP).
  • Provide support in developing/maintaining students’ daily living needs, such as toilet needs, lifting, diapering, feeding and personal hygiene, transferring, positioning, and ambulation as necessary.
  • Provide assistance with management of chronic health conditions by monitoring student health status and administering procedures as indicated in the student’s IEP of individual health care plan.
  • Assist with the arrival, departure, and transportation of students.
  • Ride the bus and assist with loading and unloading of students at home and school, monitor health status of students and/or assist with monitoring student behavior using positive behavior supports, as needed.
  • Assist in classroom/student management, assist teachers in observing, recording, and maintaining data about student performance and behavior and health status, and intervene with District-approved Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, medication, and child-specific procedures when indicated and appropriately trained.
  • Assist with monitoring student behavior using positive behavior resources.
  • Provide, under the supervision of the ESE teachers, accommodations/modifications and related services as documented in the student’s IEP.
  • Implement the District’s philosophy of education and instructional program in accordance with District policies and administrative guidelines, Florida Department of Education requirements, and provisions of State and Federal law.
  • Serve as a resource by supporting the teacher’s efforts to organize and coordinate the instructional program for students with disabilities and perform additional support duties as delegated by the principal or his/her designee.
  • Provide assistance with positioning students in standers, walkers, wheelchairs throughout the day.
  • Escort students to and from classes or specialized functions as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality and follow District policies and procedures concerning education, health, safety, personal information, and the wellbeing of students.
  • Demonstrate dependability, integrity, and respect for individual differences.
  • Maintain required certifications by participating in workshops and in-service training sessions as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.


  • Qualifications
    • Associate’s degree from an accredited institution in the field of Education, or related field

    OR
    • 60 hours of college/university course work

    OR
    • Obtain qualifying score to pass the ParaPro Assessment
    • Background Clearance
