Substitute Spanish Language Interpreter

OVERVIEW: Interpreters Collaborate with district staff to facilitate live Spanish-English and English-Spanish oral interpretation for a variety of school and district meetings, many of which occur after regular school hours

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Collaborate with district staff to facilitate live Spanish-English and English-Spanish oral interpretation for a variety of school and district meetings, many of which occur after regular school hours

• Clarify the key terms and/or concepts to be communicated with district staff to ensure accuracy

• Possess strong oral communication skills in both languages, including the ability to interpret academic and/or professional terminology into everyday language that will be clear for all participants (as needed)

• Communicate in a friendly, culturally sensitive manner

• Engage in active listening techniques to maximize effective interpretation for our community

• Maintain an impartial stance throughout the process; interpreters do not advocate of behalf of any party, rather providing the link for the other parties to communicate effectively

• Be comfortable working with headset technology for larger audience needs (depending on individual assignment)

• The length of time and frequency of duties will vary based on building and/or department need (on-call, hourly assignments)

COMPETENCIES

Language Skills

• Ability in both English and Spanish to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in on and one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.

Math Skills

• Ability in both English and Spanish to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Abilities

• Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but involved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, and TRAINING:

• No prior experience or training required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

• Associate degree (or higher) preferred

• Applicants must pass the district’s interpretation assessment

• This position works in an environment with moderate noise level. (Examples: business office with computers and printers, light traffic.)

Pay Rate: $29.90 per hour
