Job Description

Purpose:

Under general supervision, directs a unit of security personnel on a specific tour of duty in an assigned area; Performs related work.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities:

The [Supervising Special Officer Level 1] is charged with and responsible for:
  • Instructs subordinate security personnel as to their duties and responsibilities in enforcing pertinent rules and regulations.
  • Prepares work schedules, assigns security staff and evaluates their performance.
  • Makes frequent inspections and rounds to ensure safety and security.
  • Investigates, supervises and assists subordinates in the handling of serious and unusual incidents.
  • Ensures that subordinates comply with current safety and security procedures.
  • Determines if additional staff and/or presence of the police is required.
  • Interprets policy directives from higher authorities.
  • Keep appropriate records regarding patrols, demonstrations, arrests and other incidents relating to safety and security.
  • Prepares and submits reports and recommendations to superiors.
  • Keeps superiors and/or agency personnel informed of potentially dangerous or unusual situations.
  • Appears in court and/or assists other law enforcement agencies on arrest cases.
  • Adapts to changes in procedures or Workload
  • Assists others in the department as requested


Minimum Qualifications

For Appointment to Assignment Level I:

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a states Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security; or
  • An Individualized Education Program (IEP) diploma and eighteen months of full-time satisfactory experience as described in 1 above.
  • Current New York State Peace Officer certification.


For Appointment to Assignment Level II:

In addition to meeting the requirements for Assignment Level I, appointment to Assignment Level II requires:
  • Four years of satisfactory experience as a Special Officer, at least two years of which must have been as a Supervising Special Officer, Level I; or
  • Four years of full-time satisfactory experience in the field of law enforcement, protection or security, at least two years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.


Special Note:
  • A valid New York State motor vehicle driver license may be required for appointment to certain positions based on the operational needs of the network/facility. If required, this license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
