Purpose of Position
Provides supervision and education for staff under the direction of the Director/Manager of Emergency Services.

Description
  1. Assesses, plans, develops, implements, evaluates and revises education programs to meet the clinical needs of staff or to comply with federal, state, regulatory or organizational policy. Plans continuing education programs for nurses and other disciplines when indicated according to established guidelines.
  2. Provides department orientation to staff and new hires.
  3. Provides clinical instruction to staff on units to assess and assist with competency development.
  4. Updates department specific content for learning modules and unit specific policies and procedures.
  5. Maintains current knowledge of The Joint Commission and other applicable regulatory standards for assigned unit and participates in regulatory inspections. Insures that policies and procedures are current, makes corrections resulting from such surveys, documents changes made and ensures that policies and procedures are current.
  6. Participates in interviews, selection, orientation, schedules and assigns unit personnel. Conducts performance evaluations of assigned personnel and contributes evaluation information on other personnel as appropriate. Conducts evaluations for new staff prior to completion of probationary period.
  7. Supervises and evaluates clinical activities of contracted licensed nurses working within their department and ensures contracted licensed nurses know current policies and procedures.
  8. Counsels employees, recommends various personnel actions, takes appropriate disciplinary action for infractions of policy, resolves conflicts among staff, and aids in resolution of grievances.
  9. Collaborates with hospital support services to provide a safe, clean and secure environment for patients, staff and visitors. Evaluates and sets standards for unit facilities and equipment, and monitors utilization of equipment, supplies and utilities.
10. Participates in identification of the aspects of care for the patient, indicators used to monitor the quality and appropriateness of care, and the evaluation of that care.
11. Oversees and performs charge reconciliation and encounter error resolution for assigned areas.
12. Reviews and provides resolution for electronic incident reports for all coverage departments and participates in any required root cause analyses, including any corrective action plan.
13. Participates in the identification, creation, implementation, and evaluation of Process Improvement projects for assigned areas.
14. Serves as a resource person to other units in clinical specialty. Serves on nursing committees, hospital committees or professional nursing organizations. Fosters good public relations for unit, department and hospital.
15. Promotes open communication within the unit, department and with other units and departments. Plans and conducts unit staff meetings. Works with medical staff to coordinate medical and nursing management of patient care.
16. Will be responsible for departmental coverage in the director's absence.
17. Performs other work-related duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications
  • Current Registered Nurse license to practice professional nursing in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • BSN required.
  • Three years recent healthcare nursing experience.
  • Experience in assigned clinical area required.
  • Three years supervisory experience preferred.
  • Clinical education experience preferred.
  • Must maintain BLS and ACLS certification.
  • TNCC, ENPC or PALS preferred.
  • CPI within 3 months of hire and every other two years.
  • Must maintain certifications appropriate to assigned clinical areas.
