JOB DESCRIPTION:
Human Resources announces an opening for a 1.0 FTE position located in the Office of Academics, in the Syphax Education Center. The Supervisor of Instructional Support works collaboratively across the Office of Academics and school sites to enhance the quality of Tier 1 instruction and provide systems and structures for Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions. The Supervisor, Instructional Support, manages and supports the Arlington Tiered Systems of Support (ATSS) model. ATSS is a framework/philosophy that provides information, resources and support to help each student in Arlington Public Schools (APS) reach success academically and behaviorally. T his is a twelve-month position Grade P-16.

SUPERVISION

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Director, Curriculum and Instruction. Professional guidance and assistance are provided to academics and school staff. Supervision may be exercised over office support personnel, administrative, and teacher specialists. The incumbent independently plans and carries out work, makes decisions and recommendations within the scope of one's authority, keeps the supervisor informed and brings complex or sensitive issues or problems forward for guidance or resolution.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The single position allocated to this classification reports to and works under general supervision of the Director, Curriculum and Instruction. Work in this class is distinguished from other classes by its knowledge of Arlington Tiered System of Support (ATSS) opportunities, regulations and guidelines and level of responsibility in assisting the Office of Academics in district related programs and initiatives.

Guidelines include, but are not limited to, state and federal legislation, mandates, guidelines, policies and procedures as well as APS Policies and Policy Implementation Procedures (PIPs).

HAZARDS/UNUSUAL DEMANDS

Generally, work involves only exposure to normal everyday risks.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintains knowledge of current research and best practices related to instruction and tiered systems of support.

  • Supervises the work of the Teacher Specialist(s) in the Office of Instructional Support.

  • Promotes, advocates for, and helps implement, evaluate and improve student learning; analyzes lesson design, instructional delivery, teaching methods, classroom management, and student performance data.

  • Collaborates with all content and program offices across Academics, the Office of Professional learning, and the Offices of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Student Services, and School Support in order to enhance Tier 1 instruction for all students.

  • Meets regularly with and supports the work of Instructional Lead Teachers (ILTs).

  • Provides support and learning around how to effectively utilize the instructional block.

  • Supports Collaborative Learning Teams (CLTs) and strengthens the Professional Learning Community (PLC) model.

  • Support CLTs with data analysis to identify additional supports needed, create intervention plans, determine goals and progress monitoring tools.

  • Provides professional learning on evidence-based instructional practices, academic interventions, universal screeners, and inclusive practices.

  • Collaborates with stakeholders, including the Department of Information Services staff, to help specify, design, develop and refine the ATSS data system.

  • Identifies data points needed; specifies and runs ATSS related reports such as numbers, demographics and other personal, grade or school characteristics of students in program interventions as well as specifics of student growth and longitudinal information.

  • Collaborates with other departments/offices on progress monitoring tools, assessments and interventions.

  • Collects feedback from schools on the ATSS systems and supports and makes modifications based on user feedback.

  • Manages the ATSS web page including its content and presentation (consistent with Webmaster guidelines), and ATSS print/electronic communications.

  • Develops and conducts training for data system users.

  • Performs related duties as assigned or deemed necessary.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Five (5) years of professional teaching experience in a K-12 setting is required.

  • Experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and tailoring and delivering work products and services to meet the needs of diverse groups is desired.

  • Knowledge of the structure and organization of a school system including thorough knowledge of APS structure and organization, or ability to rapidly acquire and skillfully apply this specific body of knowledge.

  • Knowledge of the Response to Intervention (RTI) process and the data needed to ensure effective Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 monitoring, intervention and evaluation.

  • Comprehensive knowledge current educational trends and best practices.

  • Ability to manage fiscal, physical, and human resources.

  • Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with staff, students, and citizens.

  • Ability to utilize a wide variety of computer technology hardware and software applications.

  • Skill in problem-solving.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.

  • Ability and willingness to work under pressure of deadlines such as reporting deadlines.

  • Experience working with staff from various cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Possession of a Postgraduate Professional License with endorsement in Administration and Supervision.
  • A master's degree in education or any other field that provides a strong foundation for success in the duties and responsibilities in this class specification and five (5) years experience as a teacher, department head or educational specialist; or any equivalent combination of education and experience that would provide the above noted knowledge, skill, and ability.
