Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the Sterile Processing management, the Supervisor will supervise functions of the sterile processing area and all its related systems in an efficient manner. The incumbent will coordinate the reprocessing of all surgical instrumentation used in the healthcare facility. The assembly processing functions are: decontamination, disinfection, washing, preparation and packaging, terminal sterilization and preparation of surgical case cart system. The Supervisor will act as a liaison for the Operating Room (OR) and all outside entities.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
  • Develops, supervises, and evaluates department staff, in conjunction with management. Actively participates in the recruitment process.
  • Prepares departmental team shift reports and records to include use of electronic instrument tracking systems.
  • Assists Manager with develop and implementation of written policies/procedures and initiate adherence.
  • Assists Manager in the maintenance of operational costs at set budget level.
  • Provides management with instrumentation/capital requests and department specific needs.
  • Coordinates the processing and reassembly of instrumentation with user departments.
  • Ensures all high level disinfection processes are accurately completed and documented. Oversee weekly audits of specified trays.
  • Sends biweekly audit to independent lab to verify sterilization parameters were achieved.
  • Monitors loaner tray processing for surgical cases and coordinates with vendors.
  • Reviews OR schedule daily and throughout shift. Partners with OR Coordinators and Sterile Processing management with discrepancies regarding scheduled cases and instrumentation needs or delays.
  • Maintains quality control systems as they relate to infection control, sterilizer monitoring, packaging, and processing, etc., in accordance with institutional and departmental policy and regulatory agency requirements.
  • Maintains department schedule in partnership with management to ensure 24/7/365 coverage. Ensures staffing is consistent with volume.
  • Recommends cost reduction opportunities.
  • Participates in continuing education programs and seminars.
  • Monitors staff execution of standard work holding staff accountable for work quantity /quality and adherence to safety standards.
  • Provides feedback to management in completing annual performance evaluations.
  • Provides feedback to management areas of concern, ongoing orientation needs and coordinates with management for any individual learning plans.
  • Initiates coaching and positive disciplinary actions as necessary in partnership with Manager.
  • Maintains awareness of standards and standard changes within the healthcare system and industry.
  • In partnership with management, promotes high level of staff engagement, performance and retention.
  • Perform other related functions as directed.


Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) by IAHCSMM or Central Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT) by CBSPD required at hire.
  • A minimum of one year of supervisory experience preferred, preferably in Sterile Processing.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in the Sterile reprocessing environment is preferred. A thorough knowledge and experience with the following is required: asepsis; surgical techniques, instruments, disinfection, decontamination and all related functions within the SPD to include current AAMI standards is required.
  • Functional knowledge of sterilization regulatory guidelines is required.
  • Current knowledge and experience with instrument tracking programs required.
  • Strong communications, critical thinking and team building skills are required.
