JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Human Resources announces an opening for the position of Supervisor of Student Services (Social Work). This is a full-time position located in Syphax Education Center - Department of School Support.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
The Supervisor of Student Services (Social Work) plays a crucial role in overseeing and enhancing the quality of student services within the school district. This position is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of programs that support student academic achievement, social-emotional development, and overall well-being. The Supervisor will supervise and evaluate designated student services' staff (e.g., school social workers) as assigned. Additionally, the Supervisor serves as a liaison to the Arlington Department of Human Services and other designated community and professional organizations. This position reports to the Executive Director, Office of Student Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Development and Implementation:
  • Develop, coordinate, and evaluate comprehensive student services programs that address the academic, social, emotional, and/or postsecondary needs of all students.
  • Implement policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of student services programs and make data-driven decisions for continuous improvement.
Leadership and Management:
  • Provide leadership and supervision to designated student services staff.
  • Facilitate professional development opportunities for student services personnel.
  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive environment among staff, students, and families.
Student Support:
  • Collaborate with Special Education and other offices to support the development and implementation of services such as individualized education programs (IEPs) and 504 plans.
  • Serve a resource to support the needs of students with disabilities, English language learners, and other diverse student populations.
  • Advocate for students' rights and ensure equitable access to resources and support.
Collaboration and Communication:
  • Collaborate with school administrators, teachers, parents, and community organizations to support student success.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school district and external agencies to coordinate services and resources.
  • Communicate effectively with all stakeholders to promote awareness and understanding of student services programs.
Crisis Management:
  • Develop and implement crisis intervention strategies and support services.
  • Provide leadership and support during emergencies and critical incidents affecting students and the school community.
Data Management and Reporting:
  • Collect, analyze, and report data related to student services programs and student outcomes.
  • Prepare reports and presentations for APS leadership and the Arlington School Board

EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Professional knowledge of the theories, ethics, principles and techniques of student services personnel, to include practice models from national professional organizations
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and local regulations governing student services programs and service delivery to ensure regulatory compliance of the programs managed
  • Knowledge of child development as well as theories of learning and social interaction
  • Knowledge of APS' Strategic Plan and its organization, operations, guidelines, policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of Virginia, Arlington County and Arlington community mental health and social service agencies, processes (e.g., FAPT), programs, and providers
  • Knowledge of, or ability to rapidly acquire knowledge of, budgeting, procurement and contracting, HR management and other administrative-support programs, policies, processes and practices
  • Skill in problem solving, including making, advising on and assessing interventions to promote social and emotional functioning and mental health, gathering and using behavioral data to monitor student progress and outcome of services, and using quantitative and non-quantitative data to assess quality and sufficiency of services.
  • Strong skills in written and oral communication
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with contacts in a businesslike, customer service-oriented manner by establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and working in harmony with officials, key staff, co-workers and the general public.
  • Skill in using a computer, modern office software, enterprise systems/software, specialty systems/software for student performance tracking/reporting, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to work under pressure of deadlines such as reporting deadlines.
  • Experience and demonstrated commitment to students, staff, and families from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Required Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in social work required .
  • Virginia educational licensure with an endorsement in school social work required
  • Endorsement in administration and supervision or eligibility through reciprocity is strongly recommended.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a K-12 educational setting, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of student services, special education and disability laws, and best practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and manage multiple priorities.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in education, social work, or a related field
  • Licensure through the Virginia Department of Health Professions (e.g., Licensed Clinical Social Worker)
  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities
