Duties

  • Formulating Government Publishing Office (GPO)-wide environmental policies and guidelines to ensure compliance.
  • Providing expert advice and guidance on environmental matters to Security Services and assists in programmatic environmental oversight activities of the GPO.
  • Overseeing the handling and investigation of any emergency involving hazardous and/or toxic wastes and materials that may occur within the GPO facilities.
  • Developing and updating GPO directives pertaining to environment compliance.
  • Preparing budget for Environmental Programs and for the estimated environmental costs of the entire GPO facility. Overseeing and authorizing budget expenditures.
  • Directing, planning, evaluating, monitoring, and coordinating programs in the GPO facilities involving the air pollution, water pollution, hazardous waste storage and removal, asbestos removal and repair of all asbestos-containing materials.

  • Selectee must be able to obtain and maintain a public trust background investigation.
  • Selectee must pass a medical evaluation to determine physical ability.
  • Selectee must have acquired COR Level II certification prior to selection and maintain certification status.


Qualifications

To qualify for the Supervisory Environmental Protection Specialist, GS - 0028 - 14 , you must meet the following requirements:

Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the PG-13 grade level in the Federal Service that includes:
  • Interpreting environmental protection policies, and devising strategies for the planning and delivery of services;
  • Providing technical advice, guidance, and recommendations to management or specialists on environmental program management issues; and
  • Managing environmental programs which includes resolving technical problems, and providing direction to ensure environmental compliance.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To ensure the accomplishment of its mission, the GPO requires every employee to be reliable and trustworthy; this position requires a background investigation for Suitability. To meet those standards, all selected applicants must undergo and successfully complete a background check for Suitability. This review could include fingerprints and credit checks, as well as a full field FBI background investigation and tax and bar checks for attorney applicants. The background investigation covers a period of seven to ten years depending on the nature of the position; this process may take 6 weeks or longer. The Agency may rescind the tentative offer, if the candidate is unable to pass the background investigation.
