Job Summary:
The First Assistant Transitional Practitioner in Surgery must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to function in multiple roles with the perioperative setting. These roles include, but are not limited to primary scrub, second assisting and First Assisting. The First Assistant Transitional Practitioner must have both clinical and behavioral competencies allowing them the ability to function in these multiple roles within a dynamic environment potentially requiring them to transition from one role to the other during surgical cases, between surgical procedures and/or at multiple facilities.

Education:
Required:
Graduate of an accredited approved Surgical Technologist School or Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing Program. Currently enrolled and in good standing with a credentialed First Assisting course. \

Preferred:
Specialty Service Experience as a First Assistant

Experience:
Required:
Documentation/demonstrated knowledge and skills required to perform First Assistant role in surgery. Two (2) years' experience as a Surgical Technician or RN in the operating room.

Preferred:
Two (2) years experience as a Surgical Technician in the operating room.

Position Requirement(s): License/Certification/Registration
Required:
Successful completion of First Assistant certification exam or permissible to obtain certification one year from employment as a first assistant. Certification as a Surgical Technologist or Licensure as an RN to practice nursing in the State of Tennessee. BLS completed prior to going to unit/department and maintained going forward.

Preferred:
Specialty Specific Certification

Department Position Summary:

The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the unit's policies and procedures. This is done through evaluation of direct supervisor by direct observation, in a skills lab, or discussed verbally or written. Competency can also be evaluated by a formal peer review process and/or by self assessment based on objective criteria that is reviewed and validated.
