Department Summary

The Dean of Students Office fosters the development of leadership, civility, accountability, and responsibility in the University of North Texas student; builds community through service and involvement; and serves as an advocate for all students. This office is dedicated to supporting the UNT student who may need assistance in resolving complex personal and academic matters. We strive to help all students achieve their academic and personal goals and enhance the UNT student experience.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for providing crisis intervention for students. The position serves as an integral part of the Dean of Students office by being a primary resource for survivors and a referral source to campus/community resources and medical resources for survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, dating violence and stalking. This position develops and implements outreach programs and works with the UNT community regarding student survivors.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in related field and two years' of student services, student affairs, counseling, advising, or related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Excellent public speaking skills with experience in conducting training workshops. Ability to provide leadership and mentoring to student populations. Experience in networking across departments and programs. Ability to communicate and work with a diverse population. Strong organizational skills and ability to simultaneously execute multiple projects. Excellent verbal and written communication, and computer skills.

Job Duties:
  • Acts as initial point of contact for coordination of referrals for student crisis support, medical care, counseling, law enforcement and other services on campus and off campus as requested by the student; educate student on all options of reporting at the University (Title IX Coordinator, Dean of Students, UNT Police) and law enforcement. Provides support and advice to students that are survivors of some type of violence, assault, sexual misconduct, criminal or personal tragic activity.
  • Serves as a Campus Security Authority for Clery and a Responsible Employee under Title IX.
  • Contacts professors on behalf of the student if requested to arrange for necessary considerations for class changes and verified absences, and/or coordinates with housing to facilitate room changes if necessary and help implement any safety parameters that have been put in place (such as no contact orders or protective orders).
  • Supports the survivor during various times, such as throughout an investigation, into possible violations of the Code of Student Conduct, safety planning, and criminal investigation and subsequent court proceedings if applicable.
  • Facilitates communication between the survivor and various systems including the police agencies, university officials and district attorneys office staff and attend meetings with the survivor if requested.
  • Provides information about protective orders and assists in the application process with the district attorneys office and/ or Denton County Friends of the Family. Assists in requesting Crime Victims Compensation from the Attorney Generals office through appropriate avenues.
  • Organizes campus and community collaborative partnerships; programming and prevention efforts including student programming efforts related to Sexual Assault Awareness Month and other programming with campus partners.
  • Serves as advisor for the student group, It's on Us. It's On Us is a national organization aimed at combating sexual assault on college campuses, educating the student body about safe sex practices, and being a safe community for survivors of sexual assault.
  • Provides supervision to a Graduate Assistant.
