Pay Range

$159,330 - $204,636

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.

Job Description

We have an opening for an experienced Systems Analyst with significant statistical expertise to join our multidisciplinary team of applied modeling, simulation, and analysis professionals. Working closely with operations researchers, weapon scientists, intelligence analysts, code developers, and other subject matter experts, you will support and potentially lead projects in varied national security mission areas. You will develop and apply advanced analytical methods to support decision makers, by employing techniques such as mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and mathematical optimization to arrive at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems. While supporting applied research projects, you will provide mentorship and practical training to junior members of the group to help them develop depth and breadth in systems analysis and statistical analysis.

Within the Computational Engineering Division (CED) of the Engineering Directorate, this position will support LLNL programs in the Strategic Deterrence, Global Security Principal Associate Directorates, and Office of the Director.

In this roleyou will
  • Develop and apply advanced analytical methods to support decision makers, by employing techniques such as mathematical modeling, statistical analysis, and mathematical optimization to arrive at optimal or near-optimal solutions to complex decision-making problems.
  • Collaborate with scientists and researchers in a multidisciplinary team environment on the application of complex key technologies to military operations; using in-depth analysis, and participating in the development of innovative methods and technology.
  • Guide, contribute to, and actively participate in the conception, design, execution, and completion of original research; establishing organizational goals and objectives, allocating resources, exerting influence, and addressing program and sponsor requirements.
  • Communicate with, deliver results to, provide advice, and otherwise engage with project managers and external sponsors as appropriate.
  • Balance multiple projects/tasks and priorities of customers and partners to ensure deadlines are met, while working independently with minimal direction within scope of the assignment.
  • Travel as required to coordinate research with collaborators and visit sponsor, partner, and end-user sites.
  • Solve abstract and complex problems as required, drawing on both routine and innovative techniques and approaches to ensure project success.
  • Communicate results through formal technical reports, presentations and peer-reviewed scientific journals as appropriate.
  • Work closely with U.S. Government sponsors, other organizations, and technology leaders to provide technical input, and develop and refine new concepts that support national priorities.
  • Mentor junior technical staff to promote professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • PhD in physics, mathematics, operations research, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge in hierarchal Bayesian modeling, programming, and high-dimensional inference.
  • Significant experience with programming using python and C++ and running these codes on high-performance computing systems.
  • Ability to work with a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and project managers to develop and apply these capabilities, and to provide analytic insight.
  • Ability to effectively manage concurrent technical tasks with conflicting priorities, to approach difficult problems with enthusiasm and creativity, and to change focus when necessary while working independently under limited direction.
  • Ability to independently develop and execute analyses, engage in any needed post-production data processing, and prepare and finalize tailored reports.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and to present technical ideas/results and provide advice to management.
  • Ability to travel off-site for sponsor and customer interaction.
