Responsibilities:

Provide systems engineering, and integration support to System Definition & Integration /EV72 for the Space Launch System (SLS) Integrated Spacecraft/Payload Element (ISPE).

Support includes coordinating and interfacing with the Spacecraft and Vehicle Systems Engineering & Integration (SE&I) Division, the Spacecraft/Payload Integration & Evolution (SPIE) element office, and SLS project teams and personnel as well as participating in reviews, meetings (i.e. team/discipline, TIMs, teleconferences, etc.), working groups, and trade studies.

Specific support to be provided and performed includes, but is not limited to, the following:
  • Support system definition and integration of the ISPE functional design and analysis by providing integration across the disciplines and interfaces.
  • Perform cross-discipline ISPE assessments required to closeout integrated requirements and by supporting the creation of ISPE systems analysis documentation required to do so.
  • Provide Systems Engineer (SE) Task Team support to Safety & Mission Assurance (S&MA) for review of all ISPE Element and integrated Hazard Analysis Reports (HARs).
  • Participate in analyses, trade studies, and decision package development for the SPIE Element and provide feedback and technical recommendations (written and/or verbal) to the LSE or CE and provide assistance to the SPIE Element Lead Systems Engineer (ELSE) Analysis Product Lead.
  • Participate in critical mission event studies, process improvement studies, affordability improvement activities, or other studies focused on improving overall element design, performance, systems operation, mission success, or life cycle costs.
  • Serve as SE support to the Kennedy Space Center (KSC) Exploration Ground Systems (EGS) test planning and execution efforts specific to ISPE hardware and requirement validation.

Personnel may be asked to lead and/or support the following systems engineering tasks:
  • Serve as a Change Package Engineer (CPE) for various engineering change packages developing briefings, decisional packages, change packages, and presentation charts as well as evaluating Change Evaluation (CE) sheets and the leading Task Teams.
  • Perform technical integration across multiple NASA Centers, diverse engineering disciplines (i.e. vehicle management, structures & environments, production, test, etc.), and program/project organizations.
  • Support the Interim Cryogenic Propulsion System (ICPS) working group when assessments relevant to ISPE are being considered - such as break-up analysis for the Range Safety team.
  • Support the Joint Loads Task Team (JLTT) when assessments relevant ISPE are being considered - such as ice mitigation and debris.

Degree in engineering, physical sciences, and mathematics or equivalent fields of study from is required as well as experience in performing model integration, developing functional analyses, and/or system integration of launch vehicle requirements. Degree from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Master's with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience or BS with a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

The candidate is required to have:
  • Experience performing assessments of functional design and analyses, operational concepts, interface requirements, and requirement validation.
  • Knowledge of interface requirement documentation, functional design definition, hardware integration, and requirement verification that leads to flight hardware certification.
  • Outstanding negotiation skills demonstrated through complex technical problem solving and the capability to break down complex problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns or issues.
  • Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills are required.
  • Outstanding skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, & Outlook) are required.
  • Excellent ability to create and present formal chart packages to element level or vehicle level review boards.

Desired (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):
  • Must be comfortable working across organizational boundaries and engineering disciplines to identify and resolve element/vehicle integration issues.
  • An understanding and knowledge of the current SLS program and a working understanding of the SLS Element interfaces.

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and Jacobs' facilities (10%).

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Regular attendance is a necessity to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
