POSITION DESCRIPTION

As a member of STS, under direction of the HiSeasNet supervisor, the systems integration engineer's primary responsibility is to support, coordinate, and operate the HiSeasNet satellite communications network, which provides Internet service to the US fleet of academic research vessels. The key elements of this network include an earth station with 3 antennas located at the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), and marine-stabilized antennas on over 10 research vessels operating across the oceans. This engineer will work with the HiSeasNet Principal Investigator, SOMTS personnel, the NSF program manager, UC San Diego Information Technology Services (ITS), SDSC personnel, and with shipboard technical support groups from other oceanographic institutions.

The systems integration engineer 3 will need to apply skills as a seasoned, experienced systems integration professional with a full understanding of systems and software integration concepts to evaluate, resolve and implement medium-sized projects or portions of large projects with moderate scope and complexity. Also, the systems integration engineer will need to resolve a wide range of business processes, system functionality, implementation issues along with system and software integration issues. They must also demonstrate competency in selecting tools, methods and techniques to obtain results. Give technical presentations to associated team and other technical units. Evaluate new technologies including performing moderate to complex cost / benefit analyses.

Salary placement is determined by the top candidate's overall qualifications/relevant experience, market data and internal equity.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related scientific field and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Advanced skills associated with system integration design, modification, implementation and deployment in a moderately complex environment. Experience building working systems or configurations that meet specified requirements.
  • Experience operating an IP-based data network using dynamic routing and tunneling technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop moderately complex conversion and system implementation plans.
  • Demonstrated ability to interface with technical and non-technical management on a regular basis. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with technical people of varying levels of knowledge of satellite networking technology.
  • Ability to impart knowledge to technical and non-technical audiences and to influence outcomes to meet objectives.
  • Experience with planning for deployment and creation of feedback mechanisms. Ability to distill system requirements iteratively through communication with a variety of users.
  • Experience researching and evaluating new technology and solutions for moderately complex environments. Experience using and/or building tools to work with remote users and equipment.
  • Knowledge of and experience with monitoring tools, performance, systems optimization, including intermediate knowledge of security for data, data transfers and systems.
  • Experience with complex troubleshooting in a multi-platform environment. Strong general hardware and troubleshooting skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of and experience with monitoring tools, performance, systems optimization, including intermediate knowledge of security for data, data transfers and systems. Experience with SNMP, NetFlow, and other hardware and software management interfaces.
  • Experience with Unix OS and common server tools.
  • Experience with current and past computer interface technology (ie RS-232 Serial, Ethernet, USB, etc.)
  • Experience with scripting languages (ie perl, python, expect, shell, etc.)
SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Unexpired U.S. passport is required.

  • This position requires the ability to respond to critical issues at odd hours when possible.
  • Ability to travel to ships in port as well as short-duration at sea testing.
  • US Passport required.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $91,300 - $170,700 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $43.73 - $81.75

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
