Position Overview

The Tax Accountant position is an entry level accounting professional performing bookkeeping, accounting, payroll and income tax return preparation under the supervision of a Tax Senior/Supervisor or Tax Manager. The tax associate role is designed to help beginning staff members develop a strong set of core skills and ensure new tax professionals are well prepared to begin their careers and support the firm in accounting and tax services. It is a dual discipline position doing work in both business accounting and individual income tax return preparation. The tax associate creates (and then maintains) the financial books and tax records for multiple clients.

Accounting Functions

Reconciliations: Prepare bank reconciliations, credit card reconciliations and loan reconciliations using EXCEL worksheets for supporting calculations. Reconcile accounts to the QuickBooks balance sheet and profit and loss statement

Workpaper Preparation: Prepare accounting workpapers for accounts receivable, advances, prepaids, inventory, fixed assets, intangible assets, accounts payable, credit card payable, accrued liabilities, leases, loans payable and equity accounts.

Payroll: Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual payroll tax returns, unemployment tax returns, tax deposits and year-end employee Form W-2 wage statements including Form 1099 nonemployee compensation paid to independent contractors and reconcile to payroll tax expense and liability accounts.

Sales Tax: Prepare Illinois Form ST-1 Sales and Use Tax Return and reconcile to sales tax payable.

Accounts Payable: Perform accounts payable bill entry and vendor payments.

Financial Statements: Prepare QuickBooks balance sheet and profit and loss statement substantiated by Business Organizer account analysis and reconciliations.

Individual Tax Functions

File Prep: Organize individual client tax forms such as W-2s, 1099s and deduction documents, set up client tax folder, complete internal tax prep checklist for information received, print client worksheets and prepare EXCEL worksheets.

Data Entry: Perform the initial data entry of tax information into ProSeries tax software for Form 1040 U.S. individual income tax return and deductions on Sch. A itemized deductions, Sch. B interest and ordinary dividends, Sch. C profit or loss from business (sole proprietorship), Sch. D capital gains and losses and Sch. E supplemental income and loss.

E-File: Upon completion of the income tax return, follow up with the client for signed e-file authorization forms, submit federal and state income tax returns for electronic filing and obtain acknowledgement of e-file acceptance.

Business Tax Functions

Assist Tax Supervisor or Tax Manager with preparation of the book tax income reconciliation for sole proprietorship, real estate rental property, C corporation, S-corporation, partnership, and LLC tax returns.

Required Skills & Experience

3 + years of experience as a Accountant or Tax Accountant

Experience working with financial statements

Experience generating and working with complex tax returns such as 1120s, partnership, and S-corp tax returns

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Tax

Experience with QuickBooks, ProSeries, Microsoft Word and Excel

Nice to Have Skills & Experience

CPA or Enrolled Agent credentials

Experience with ProSeries
