Why does the job exist?
The position involves moderate to large size dollar protest cases to be resolved with interpretation of statues, regulations and department policy to taxpayer.
How does it get done?
This position will:
* Resolve and close 140 to 160 protest cases or 80% of protest cases assigned annually
* Evaluate and attempt to resolve taxpayer's documentation and statues
* Analyze and research cases and discuss issues, procedures, and solutions with legal staff
* Develop basis for case conclusions
* Analyze, interpret, and apply appropriate tax laws, regulations, decisions, orders and ruling to support case finding

This position serves New Mexico taxpayers, businesses external agencies and the Taxation and Revenue Department (TRD).
Ideal Candidate
Preferred experience in:
* New Mexico TRD laws, regulations, decisions, orders and rulings
* Analyzing and researching assessments of tax refund, credit process and calculate penalty and interest
* Conduct and participate m various tax workshops and seminars
* Training other auditors
* Auditing moderate to high dollar and complicate audits
* Knowledge of MTC sampling
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or Taxation to include eighteen (18) semester hours of accounting or auditing (six (6) semester hours in finance or business law may substitute for up to six (6) semester hours of accounting or auditing) and two (2) years of experience in Auditing, Accounting, Taxation, Collections, and/or Finance. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below. Possession of a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certificate issued by the New Mexico Board of Public Accountancy may substitute for the required hours in accounting.

• If Minimum Qualification requires a specific number of "semester hours" in a field (e.g. 6 semester hours in Accounting), applicants MUST have those semester hours in order to meet the minimum qualifications. No substitutions apply for semester hours.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment. Must be current with all tax reporting/payment. Employment is subject to pre-employment criminal background check to include fingerprint checks and is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Office setting, exposure to VDT, extensive personal computer and phone usage. Extended periods of sitting and some lifting. Good communication skills; Interacting with the public required. High pressure/stress situations. Some outdoor work may be required.
