Oak Plains Academy is looking for people who want to make a difference in the lives of youth as a Teacher Assistant. The Teacher Assistant is responsible to s upervise and monitor students assigned to the In-School Suspension Program. To assist in the direct care and management of children and adolescent students as prescribed by the treatment team; to provide supervision, safety and crisis management for the student population; to complete documentation of student behavior and participation in programming; to adhere to the scheduled activities; role model positive, mature behavior; utilize positive behavioral strategies to minimize student crisis and maximize success. This position is responsible for assisting the classroom teacher in the implementation of the academic program for each student under their care.

The ideal candidate will be patient, accepting, and compassionate and have a true desire to help children. The candidate is someone who can adhere to strict guidelines for our policies regarding supervision of the youth in our care. There will be times when overtime is required and we are seeking someone who can adapt to flexible schedules and is passionate about helping youth with mental health and behavioral problems. This role offers the following:

Oak Plains Academy is a comprehensive and highly structured 98-bed residential treatment program offering psychiatric residential treatment services to children and adolescents ages 7-17, struggling with emotional and behavioral issues. Residents receive an individualized treatment plan, geared to meet their personal needs. A professional team of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, therapists, nurses, and teachers serve hundreds of children and adolescents annually with the common goal of treating and healing trauma and building resiliency in the residents we serve. Located on 20 acres of rolling hills in a rural setting, about 45 minutes from Nashville, Tennessee, Oak Plains Academy campus features a full-size gymnasium, dining hall, separate academic building, and four dormitories. Our wooded campus provides an excellent opportunity for outdoor recreational activities.

Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide supervision for students who are assigned to the In-School Suspension classroom. Taking daily attendance.
  • Actively participate in instruction in the In-School suspension classroom to challenge students to complete their assignments and reach their potential.
  • Review in-school suspension policies, procedures and student expectations with students daily.
  • Work with students on issues such as behavior, conflict resolution, and social skills.
  • Record information for students entering In-School Suspension, such as grade level, behavior, and reason for assignment to detention.
  • Monitor all ISS assignments; provide encouragement and feedback to students.
  • Complete student Work Completion Logs for all students assigned to the room.
  • Provide substitute instructions for when they are out.
  • Assists in providing safe delivery of care to meet the goals and objectives of each student's plan of care.
  • Collaborates with other disciplines to ensure follow through on all aspects of students' treatment program.
  • Recognizes and reports to appropriate person physical/medical/behavioral status of the student in a timely manner.
  • Follows program schedule/milieu with minimal supervision.
  • Alerts supervisors to risk management and quality concerns.
  • Satisfactory health, strength and stamina to meet the physical, mental and emotional demands and stress-ors that position requires:walking, running, standing, lifting, irregular working hours, and assisting with the restraints. This position requires use of "Handle with Care"

REQUIREMENTS: this role requires a through background check including fingerprinting, local and federal government check and drug and employment verification.

  • Minimum:High School Diploma or equivalent plus at least one year experience in mental health with demonstrable competence in required knowledge and responsibilities.
  • Valid Driver License in good standing
