Job Purpose Statement/s: The job of "High School Band Director" is to instruct students using the curriculum set forth by the music staff of the Olympia School District. To develop the student's musical skills on band instruments. The bands perform about 3 concerts per year as well as taking part in the local Band Assessment Festival. Encourage students to take part and coach them toward solo/ensemble festival, audition for all-state/all Northwest groups and promote private lessons.

1.0 FTE position for the remainder of the 24-25 school year only. Position teaches band at Capital HS, LP Brown ES, and Garfield ES.

Essential Job Functions(HS Director):
  • Advises students in daily performance and shares opportunities to improve and excel on band instruments and curriculum. Knowledge of Brass, Woodwind, and Percussion instruments is essential to teach good fingerings and styles as well as the knowledge of good quality instruments to assist parents when obtaining instruments for Beginning Band and upgrading from younger instruments.
  • Assesses students in individual and classroom performance, as well as concerts and festivals in accordance to the goals set forth by the classroom-teaching curriculum as well as the Washington Music Educators Music Standards.
  • Assists students in performance opportunities and coaches students for solos, and ensembles. Works with other music teachers in the building for a successful collaborative middle school music department.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, parents and district music staff for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
  • Reports progress to students and parents at a 6, 12, and 18-week set of mid-term and semester final grades (or follows the grading process at the school).


Essential Job Functions (Elementary Teacher):
  • Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress for the purpose of supporting teacher's expectations, developing methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
  • Assesses student for the purpose of providing feedback to students, parents and administration regarding students' progress, expectations, goals, etc.
  • Assists other teachers for the purpose of implementing curriculum.
  • Collaborates with school personnel, parents and various community agencies for the purpose of improving the quality of student outcomes, developing solutions and planning curriculum.
  • Directs instructional assistants, volunteers and/or student aides for the purpose of providing an effective school program and addressing the needs of individual students.
  • Instructs students for the purpose of improving their success in academic, interpersonal and daily living skills through a defined course of study.
  • Monitors student activities (e.g. classroom, lunch, grounds, etc.) for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment.
  • Prepares teaching materials and reports (e.g. grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and providing documentation of teacher and student progress.
  • Reports incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, district and/or school policies.


Other Job Functions:
  • Assists with Middle School Music staff in smooth running of a large Middle School Music program
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Participates in The Washington Music Educators Conference and attends regular Chinook League Music Educator Meetings to give input on Festival Dates
  • Participates in various meetings (e.g. parent conferences, in-service training, site meetings, etc.) for the purpose of receiving and/or providing information and/or meeting credential requirements.


Job Requirements - Qualifications:
  • Experience Required: Preferred High School band experience and Elementary Band Instruction.
  • Skills: Proficient on all winds, brass and percussion instruments. motivate students, communicate with individuals from varied educational and cultural backgrounds, direct support personnel, evaluate performance.
  • Knowledge: Age appropriate teaching methods, state curriculum framework, education code.
  • Abilities: Good conducting and moderate Piano Skills. Able to perform significant physical tasks that may include lifting/carrying, reaching/handling, talking/hearing conversations, near/far visual acuity/depth perception/accommodation/color vision/field of vision, and standing/walking for varying periods of time.
  • Licenses, Certifications, Bonding, and/or Testing Required: Teaching Credential for level of instruction, Criminal Justice Fingerprint Clearance.
