JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Exceptional Education

REPORTS TO: School Principal

JOB GOAL: To provide effective exceptional education services that create optimal educational opportunities for students with disabilities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Alabama Teacher's Certificate with endorsement in special education
  • Experience in full range of severity levels and service delivery models (particularly autism)
  • Can participate in restraint training and participate in restraint of a student, if needed
  • Team leadership experience
  • Proficiency in oral and written communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills, with an emphasis on communication and collaboration with a wide variety of people and groups
  • Knowledge of effective strategies for academic and behavior intervention
  • Ability to use technology to communicate, to plan and provide instruction, to facilitate student learning, to manage data, and to produce/submit required reports, correspondence, and/or financial information
  • Knowledge of assistive technology devices for students with special needs
  • Ability to meet suitability criteria under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457
  • Such Alternatives to the above qualifications as state, federal, and local law and the Board may require

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, mission, goals, and priorities
  2. Demonstrates competent knowledge of the structure of the academic discipline; plans and implements appropriate instruction for each student, integrating individual student goals/objectives into classroom plans
  3. Assesses student needs and develops an individual education program (IEP)/504 plan for students with disabilities; monitors and updates IEPs /504 plans as needed
  4. Implements developmentally appropriate instructional strategies
  5. Trains and supervises teacher assistants for students with disabilities
  6. Cooperates with other professionals to coordinate services for students
  7. Employs effective educational instruction and behavior management techniques which foster good self-concept and independence in learning
  8. Assists individual students and/or teachers with the use of assistive technology/adaptive devices
  9. Assists with coordination of the local school process for the identification and referral of students for special education services
  10. Participates in restraint training and is able to restrain a student, if needed
  11. Maintains and monitors records of students served by the instructional support team
  12. Serves as a team member in determining student accommodations, referral, eligibility, placement, and individual program development
  13. Monitors all evaluation requirements and submits referral/documentation to central office
  14. Collaborates, consults, and/or co-teaches with general education teachers to provide support for students with disabilities in the classroom
  15. Assists and cooperates with teachers, counselors, therapists, and other school personnel in the provision of effective educational services to students
  16. Administers all school, District, and state required assessments in accordance with required procedures
  17. Facilitates students' individual and collaborative use of technology to support learning
  18. Maintains frequent and substantive communication with parents; involves parents and/or families as active partners in planning and supporting student learning
  19. Actively participates in collaborative professional learning communities to increase student achievement and grow professional expertise
  20. Actively engages in ongoing, continuous professional learning
  21. Uses and maintains confidential information in accordance with state and federal law and local Board policy
  22. Practices safe, responsible, legal, and ethical use of technology following the Hoover City Schools' Acceptable Use Agreement
  23. Maintains and submits required reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner
  24. Properly cares for equipment and material resources of the school system
  25. Cooperates in all teacher regulations and responsibilities in the local school
  26. Adheres to local Board policies, administrative procedures, and other like directives, as well as state, federal, and local laws
  27. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s)
