Description

Summary:

Will oversee the daily operations of an itinerant vision teacher and provide educational services to students districtwide. Will ensure 100% compliance in service delivery and evaluation. Will maintain a caseload of students.

  • Teach district students who are visually impaired and modify instructions for these students.
  • Assess district students to qualify them as visually impaired.
  • Attend Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) meetings regarding students with visual impairments.
  • Assist classroom teachers regarding curriculum and activities of the classroom that, as a direct result of the student's visual impairment, require adaptation or reinforcement for the student
  • Obtain large print or Braille textbooks.
  • Provide low vision aids and instructions for using such aids.
  • Maintain contact with parents to assist them in the development of a realistic understanding of their child's abilities, progress, and future goals.
  • Share resources and educational information with parents.
  • Interpret specific eye conditions and results of functional vision assessments.
  • Assist in making environmental modifications in the schools to accommodate visually impaired students.
  • Share responsibility for ongoing assessment and program planning.
  • Provide in-service training programs related to vision impairment when needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of current issues and methodologies within the field through conventions, publications, and interaction with other professionals.
  • May occasionally visit students' homes to provide special education and vision adaptations and modifications.
  • Performs all other tasks and duties as assigned.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in a directly related field; valid Texas teacher certificate with required endorsements for subject and subject level assigned; TEA Certification in Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (EC-12) or TEA Emergency Certification in Teacher of Students with Visual Impairments (EC-12).
  • Demonstrated ability to assess the environmental modifications needed in schools to accommodate visually impaired students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Braille.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret specific eye conditions and the results of functional vision assessments.
  • Demonstrated organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required to achieve the goals of the position.
  • Bachelor's Degree in a directly related field; valid Texas teacher certificate with required endorsements or valid university deficiency plan for permit.
  • Candidates holding a valid Texas teaching certificate in one content area and pursuing an additional certification for a Teacher of Students with
  • Visual Impairments (TSVI) are eligible to apply for a TSVI position under an Emergency Permit, he or she must meet the following criteria (extracted from TAC Chapter 230, Subchapter F, Rule §230.77, Section (f)(2)(B)
  • Must be able to drive and have personal transportation.
