Description

Teaches English as second language to international students. Teaching includes speaking, writing, listening and reading. Additionally, teaches study skills necessary for studying in an American university.
  1. Plans and organizes instructional material according to the objectives stated in the Intensive English Curriculum Guide.
  2. Meets and coordinates with co-teachers regarding books, skill areas to be taught, class schedules, and so forth.
  3. Meets and teaches assigned classes at scheduled times.
  4. Evaluates and corrects student work, including in-class work, compositions and tests.
  5. Administers periodic tests, quizzes and exams.
  6. Meets with students for informal conferences and conversations regarding progress; meets with students for formal midterm and final evaluations.
  7. Keeps a class record book of attendance and grades; prepares and submits all required reports pertaining to teaching activities.
  8. Participates in registration, testing and other activities during the first and last weeks of the semester.
  9. Performs other job-related duties as assigned.

  • Organize instructional planning according to objectives stated in the Language and Culture Center's Curriculum Guide of the LCC Staff Handbook.
  • Complete Convener Reports to indicate how curriculum objectives are being met, and how textbooks are serving instructors and students.
  • Ensure that students are participating fully in all program components and are provided with appropriate student services.
  • Meet and teach all assigned classes at scheduled times.
  • Write midterm and final evaluations for individual students.
  • Keep a class record of attendance and grades. Record student attendance weekly in the LCC attendance system.
  • Prepare and submit all required reports pertaining to teaching activities.
  • Notify LCC Director in a timely manner of field trips, room changes, or any departure from assigned schedule.
  • Carry out program procedures as outlined in section 03 "Procedures and Information for Instructors," in the LCC Staff Handbook.
  • Contribute towards maintaining CEA accreditation and UCIEP membership.
  • Notify LCC Director prior to any absence from class and make appropriate arrangements in case of absence; if budget allows, arrange for a substitute instructor from the approved list and provide the substitute instructor with lesson plans and class materials.
  • Comply with LCC policy regarding supervisory classroom observation each semester.
  • Attend scheduled meetings with LCC Director.
  • Confer with LCC Director at appropriate intervals.
  • Participate in all LCC instructors' meetings, in-service meetings, and program-wide student activities.
  • Participate in curriculum committee and subcommittee meetings, including textbook selection.
  • Work as assigned at LCC Welcome Week.
  • Report any absences for any reason in the University of Houston (UH) People Advantage Self Service (PASS) system.
  • Meet with students for informal conferences and conversations regarding progress; meet with students for formal midterm and final evaluations as determined each semester.
  • Participate in the LCC system of governance through service on LCC committees.
  • Complete the University of Houston's ePerformance by the designated deadline.
  • Complete Annual Mandatory Training as required by the University of Houston.
  • Stay current in the state of the art through research, professional publications, conferences, and membership in relevant organizations.
  • Assume other related duties incidental to the work described herein.


Qualifications

Masters and 1 year experience

Requires application of advanced principles, techniques and theory in a professional discipline or a thorough general business management knowledge. Knowledge of this level is typically obtained through a directly job-related Master's degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed. Requires a minimum of one (1) year of directly job-related experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

A Master's in TESL/TEFL, OR in a closely related field, with documented graduate coursework for credit in the areas of:
  • linguistics
  • structure of English
  • second-language acquisition
  • language teaching methodology
  • culture and society
  • second-language assessment
  • supervised language teaching practicum


  • Knowledge of or previous formal study of a second language
  • Prior ESL/EFL teaching experience required
  • Prior ESL/EFL teaching experience in a higher education setting, preferred but not required
  • Overseas ESL/EFL teaching experience, preferred but not required
