Responsibilities

The Teaching Laboratory Specialist will be responsible for:
  • Training, scheduling, and management of Lab Technicians, including Work-Study, Intern, and Volunteer students to assist with lab duties
  • Administrative oversight of lab preparation, i.e., copies of worksheets, quizzes, and exams as required
  • Providing guidance and orientation of lab materials during weekly wetlab in conjunction with the Lead Teaching Assistant.
  • Monitoring Environmental Health and Safety training for all Teaching Assistants and staff to ensure training is up to date at all times
  • Participating in weekly and ad hoc meetings with the Lead Teaching Assistant for both courses.
  • Supervision and back up for aliquoting chemicals, centrifuge samples, stocking supplies, etc.
  • Taking inventory and maintaining live and preserved specimens, equipment, and chemicals
  • Utilizing a University Purchasing Card or Spearmart to order and replenish lab materials and supplies as needed
  • Performing routine maintenance and cleaning of live specimens and their tanks
  • Performing and delegating responsibilities for all lab and prep room upkeep, including maintenance and disposal of hazard waste containers per EH&S standards
  • Performing routine testing of microscopes and other equipment and requests repairs as needed.
  • Assisting the Lab Coordinator with the editing and assembly of the Teaching Assistant manuals for BSC 2010L and BSC 2011L
  • Updating the lead Teaching Assistant manual and online module as needed
  • Suggesting and implementing improvements to assure the smooth-running of the labs when appropriate
  • Assisting with curriculum development projects on an as-needed basis.
  • Other duties as assigned; including assisting the Faculty Coordinator with communications and trouble shooting and addressing challenging situations when they arise.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and two years of experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and six years of experience. (Note: a combination of post high school education and experience equal to six years.)

Preferred Qualifications and Experience include:
  • BS in Biology or any affiliated science, or a minimum of 18 credits in Biological Science including Biology Lab I and Biology Lab 2 or comparable coursework
  • Experience working in a lab setting and with training others
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to troubleshoot and problem solve
  • Experience performing accurately in a detail oriented environment
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Experience in management and training of staff, students or volunteers
  • Experience in purchasing or budgeting

Anticipated Salary Range

Anticipated starting salary for the position will be $40,000, starting salary will be offered commensurate with experience and qualifications.
