Technical Director of Central Processing Dept / 40 Hours / Day

About the Role

The CSPS Technical Director is responsible for organizing and curating clinical and technical expertise to support MGH's reprocessing of reusable medical devices. This pivotal role involves interpreting industry regulations and leading the continuous assessment and development of policies, procedures, and practices for medical device reprocessing at MGH and MGPO. The Technical Director also oversees the MGH High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization (HLDS) Program and the Reusable Instrument Device Oversight (RIDOC) Committee to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission (TJC) and The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). Responsibilities also include participating in community hospital tracer events and managing the Salem Hospital professional service agreement (PSA).

As a key CSPS Department leadership team member, the Technical Director is accountable for various critical specialty programs, committees, and teams, including the Training and Staff Development team, Business Operations team, Quality Program, Inventory Control Committee, and Off-site Support. The Technical Director harmonizes the efforts of these teams, ensuring that the department's HLDS standard operating procedures for reusable instruments and flexible endoscopes align with evolving industry regulations and standards.

Principle Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with the Operations Director to consistently implement standard best practices for instrument and endoscope reprocessing, supply inventory, and project management.
  • Utilizes strong knowledge of industry standards to continuously assess and develop departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory agencies such as The Joint Commission (TJC) and The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH)
  • Identify and assess deficiencies and propose appropriate policy and workflow modifications and revisions.
  • Directly supervise, mentor, and develop leaders staffing the High-Level Disinfection & Sterilization Program, Training & Staff Development team, Business Operations team, Quality program, and Clinic liaison.
  • Responsible for the evolution and continued development of the High-Level Disinfection and Sterilization Program, contracted Professional Service Agreements, and the Reusable Instrument Onboarding Committee (RIDOC).
  • Develops a scalable educational strategy focused on achieving departmental goals. Oversees the Training & Staff Development team and ensures consistent onboarding, training, and competency processes are followed and documented.
  • Creates user support teams and develops and coordinates offerings for user training at multiple levels across all MGH properties.
  • Enhances utilization of existing information technology systems; reviews and recommends expanded use cases and adoption of new technology to improve the department as appropriate.
  • Establishes and monitors departmental productivity, quality, and compliance metrics to meet accepted industry standards (i.e., TJC, AAMI, MDPH).
  • Develops and maintains departmental data measurements and dashboards.
  • Monitors customer feedback (i.e., Main OR and ambulatory clinics), compiles and analyzes support data, and recommends procedural workflow changes as appropriate.
  • Develop and implement a robust quality improvement program that draws insights from several sources, including quality events, safety reports, departmental tracers, and routine audits. Uses educational and environmental strategies to improve individual and group performance.
  • Attends and participates in hospital committee meetings as appropriate (i.e., Infection Control Committee and Safety Committee).
  • Exercises impeccable judgment in identifying, assessing, and responding to urgent/emergent quality and patient safety issues, escalates to senior leadership as appropriate
  • Serves as a senior Sterile Processing Leadership team member and may serve as the Sr. Director's representative to other hospital units and departments.


Budget/Money

  • Prepare and monitor fiscal year departmental budgets for assigned cost center expenses, salary and wage expenses, and capital equipment.
  • Guide cost analyses as required to determine the cost-effectiveness of departmental activities.


Staffing

  • Interviews, hires, trains, orients, schedules, and manages the performance of manager or supervisor-level direct reports
  • In collaboration with the CSPS leadership team, reviews and approves time-off requests, completes payroll, monitors attendance and tardiness, interprets hospital policies, and ensures adequate coverage for all areas of responsibility.


Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of progressive management experience is required, with at least four years of experience in a Sterile Processing setting; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with clinicians and support staff.
  • Strong understanding of Microsoft Office applications and personal computers
  • Exemplary analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Analytical abilities necessary to organize, supervise, and evaluate the work of others
