JOB SUMMARY
The Diesel Mechanic Technician oversees the management of the truck fleet maintenance and repair.

Provides expertise and knowledge to repair all equipment owned or leased by Houston Community College Commercial Truck Driving School.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Assess the needs and establish a maintenance schedule for the preventive maintenance on all truck driving equipment according to industry standards and Houston Community College guidelines.

Oversee the completion of all maintenance and repair on tractors and trailers, which are recorded on the Vehicle Condition Report (VCR), for post-trips or pre-trips on a daily basis to ensure safety.

Collaborate with the Program Director and Program Faculty to ensure the truck fleet meets program needs for student instruction.

Perform maintenance work to include, but not limited to: maintenance of batteries, radiators, drive belts, steering boxes, filters, brakes, transmissions, rear axles, tires, lights, mirrors, air conditioning parts, exhaust systems and oil changes.

Maintain accurate Vehicle Preventative Maintenance Schedule, mileage and fuel usage records.

Keep track of repair time and reports time on work orders.

Stay current on new technology and current local, state and federal regulations and requirements.

Perform other duties, tasks and assignments as required.QUALIFICATIONS
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma, or GED, plus 2 years' mechanic experience required
  • Associate's degree in related field and/or ASE Certification preferred
  • 2 years' mechanic experience required
Licensing & Certification
  • Valid Texas Driver License
  • Must have a good driving record and be able to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License within the first 6 months of employment
Special Skills
  • Able to lift heavy objects (up to 80 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time
  • Able to make closely coordinated eye/hand movements within very fine tolerance and/or calibration demands
  • Able to make rapid closely-coordinated eye/hand movements on a patterned response space within somewhat fine tolerance demands
  • Able to identify and order parts for trucks from appropriate vendors
  • Able to work with a wide range of diesel engines, tractor components and trailers
  • Able to organize repairs, preventive maintenance and compliance of equipment within state and federal regulations

Working Conditions
General Office. Must be able to perform all job requirements with or without reasonable accommodations; remain in a stationary position during shift; move items weighing up to 25 pounds; position self to operate job equipment; apply established protocols in a timely manner. Must access, input and retrieve information from technology devices; communicate with others to accomplish job requirements. May be required to work after hours to include weekends and holidays.
