Summary:

This position handles calls for a three-campus hospital and operates a telephone console to relay incoming, outgoing and inter-office calls as well as performing other related hospital communication and clerical duties. Responsible for providing supportive informational services to the public, all staff, patients, their families and visitors. Responsible for notifying the nursing staff to fill patient service request via Nurse Call System. Must respond to all emergencies, equipment failure, codes, fire, traumas, stats and various alarms. Assist Lead Operator with training of staff. Update and maintain information used by Telephone Operators as it is received. Maintain various records and logbooks. This position requires the ability to read, understand and communicate orally in English.

Job Specifics:

Part time/ Rotating shifts when needed on all shifts

1st shift: (7a-3:30p)

2nd shift (3p-11p)

3rd shift 1(1p - 7a)
  • Operate console to relay incoming, outgoing, and inter-office calls and perform other related hospital communications and clerical duties. These activities involve the following components which are performed to assist in providing hospital wide communication on a daily basis, as observed by the Lead Operator and Communications Manager.
  • Handle calls in a timely, professional and courteous manner.
  • Page personnel over the intercom system or via beeper system.
  • Assist patients via the Nurse Call System, communicate with Nursing staff regarding patient service requests. Notify Nursing personnel of any emergencies.
  • Activate emergency related procedures such as codes, fires; disasters, on an as needed basis "priority status" and document.
    • Assist Lead Operator with training of staff.
    • Assist with maintaining various logbooks and records used by department staff as well as making changes to monthly schedules received from various hospital departments having "on call" personnel when notified.
    • Responsible for maintenance of logbook and notification of proper departments concerning Death Certificates and release
    • Notify various Surgical department staff when requested by Physician or other hospital personnel.
    • Relay patient information when required.
    • Act as an information source for staff, patient, visitors and community.
    • Ability to judge the appropriate action and response to changes, circumstances or problems.
    • Distribute minor telephone equipment to hospital staff.
    • Ability to work all shifts, weekends, holidays and overtime when needed to accomplish departmental needs.
    • Demonstrate a cost conscious attitude, ability to set priorities to complete workload and perform related duties as instructed by the Manager of Communications.
    • Communicates and interacts in a courteous and professional manner with all hospital staff, visitors, patients and vendors. Maintain discretion and confidentiality when communicating with others.


    Qualifications

    • High School Graduate
    • One year of telephone operator experience or multi line console experience
    • Computer knowledge, demonstrated effective communication skills
    • Must demonstrate the potential ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in the position description
