General Statement of Duties

Ability to provide direct intervention service to high-risk students. Shall be able to use computers, software and other current technology. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking and light lifting up to 10 pounds. Effective verbal and written communication skills for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.

Essential Duties

  • Enforces and monitors Code of Virginia and School Board policy requirements of compulsory school attendance.
  • Maintains working knowledge of state law, school board policy, Virginia Department of Education policy and administrative regulations regarding school attendance matters.
  • Investigates reports of students not enrolled in school.
  • Schedules, develops and implements Attendance Compliance Plans and School Conference meetings in accordance with timelines specified in the Code of Virginia and School Board Policy requirements.
  • Collaborates with school social workers and other school personnel to effectively support the timely filing of a CHINS petition or parent warrant when necessary.
  • Consults with administrators, school counselors, teachers and other school personnel regarding student attendance.
  • Conducts home visits with parents and students for the purpose of checking on truant students and gaining parental support for students' compliance in attending school.
  • Maintains accurate records of truancy caseload.
  • Maintains documents, files and records for all work related activities.
  • Engages with the community members to support students remaining in school.
  • Links students and families to community and school based services as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelors or Associates degree in social work, behavioral science, criminal justice or a related field preferred. Experience working with truancy reduction, dropout prevention and student attendance programs preferred. Ability to read and respond to communication, compose letters and file accurate reports. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and to work effectively with a diverse population of students, parents, school staff and community. Bilingual (English and Spanish speaking) is a plus. Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule. Possession of a valid Virginia driver's license required. Must be willing and able to use personal vehicle as needed to make home visits and meeting with stakeholders outside of the school as needed.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Temporary position, Maximum of 29 hour per week. No benefits. Employment in this position is contingent upon a satisfactory background check which may include, but is not limited to: confirmation of a person's identity; review of criminal convictions records; verification of educational degree, license, or certification required for the position; review of Department of Motor Vehicles records; Department of Justice fingerprint scan; and/or drug and alcohol testing as required and allowable by law. A satisfactory background check is defined as the absence of a criminal history record which bears a demonstrable relationship to the applicant's or employee's suitability to perform the required duties and responsibilities of the position. Position may require irregular work hours and travel by the employee to student homes.

HOURS WORKED MAY NOT EXCEED 29 HOURS PER WEEK ALONE OR IN COMBINATION WITH ANY OTHER TEMPORARY ASSIGNMENT, INCLUDING SUBSTITUTING.

RATE OF PAY IS $28.98 PER HOUR
