GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs complex (journey-level) legislative, consultative, informational, and communications work. Work involves assisting TJJD staff with monitoring activities related to the Texas Legislature, other state agencies, and other relevant external stakeholder groups; conducting outreach to and coordinating communication with external stakeholder groups; and developing content to inform internal staff and external stakeholders about the agency's functions. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. May routinely assist others in performing work of greater complexity.

May be required to work more than 40 hours per workweek, and travel occasionally.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Participates in agency activities related to the legislative session; attends legislative hearings and meetings with legislators, legislative staff, and other legislative liaisons.

Assists the Director of Stakeholder Relations with coordinating agency interactions with and testimony before legislative committees and legislative members.

Assists with the development and timely submission of material that is responsive to legislative inquiries; tracks legislative inquiries and ensures the centralized organization of responsive materials.

Coordinates communication with legislative support and executive agencies.

Monitors standing and interim committee schedules and agendas, media stories, and other stakeholder communications, and summarizes relevant information for the Director of Stakeholder Relations, Director of Communications, and other relevant staff.

Prepares summaries of meetings, hearings, and other relevant events impacting the agency.

Assists the Director of Communications and other relevant staff with conducting interviews and research; verifying sources; and ensuring the completeness, accuracy, and accessibility of print and online materials.

Conducts outreach to community and professional groups to promote interest in agency activities, and assists communications staff with the development of a newsletter describing these activities.

Assists the communications staff with content creation for social media, including posting approved messages.

Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:

  • Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible.
  • Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested timeframes.


Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.

Monitors outcomes for racial, ethnic, and gender disparities and takes action to address identified disparities.



Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in political science, business or public administration, journalism, public relations, communications, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Direct, paid experience working with the Texas Legislature, another state legislature, the U.S. Congress, public or media relations, communications, or research services.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

• Knowledge of state and federal legislative processes and state government administration.

• Knowledge of agency functions, policies, and procedures; news and communication media; various social media platforms; and preparing informational material.

• Skill in compiling, evaluating, synthesizing, organizing, and presenting legislative information.

• Skill in problem solving and negotiating.

• Skill in policy analysis, research, and effective writing.

• Ability to prepare concise reports.

• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to convey complex ideas and concepts.

• Ability to maintain effective working relationships within and outside the agency.

• Ability to work under pressure and meet close deadlines.

• Ability to use a computer and applicable software.

• Ability to work more than 40 hours per week.
