GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Performs highly advanced (senior level) consultative services and technical assistance work.

Work involves in-class training and on-the-job training to facility staff (both new hire and veteran staff) in regards to Texas Model 2.0. Coordinates Texas Model 2.0 training with an emphasis on Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills. Focuses on creating and maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment for senior staff and ensures staff are able to implement Texas Model 2.0 strategies. Manages the training of DBT skills and review of behavior chains. Works collaboratively with facility administration and staff to troubleshoot Texas Model 2.0 training pitfalls and works with staff who are struggling with implementing skills/routines. Maintains communications with the Director of Training, Juvenile Justice Training Academy (JJTA) management, facility administration, and other internal stakeholders to support the needs of staff in regards to Texas Model 2.0 implementation.

Utilizes a blended learning approach to effectively train both new hires and veteran staff on Texas Model concepts. Works with treatment department and facility to ensure all new staff are trained on delivery of skills groups, nurture groups, and behavior chains. Works with facility leadership to help provide support to staff who are struggling with implementing routines and Texas Model 2.0 concepts.

Acts as a resource for staff to assist with program needs, which may include, but is not limited to providing refresher trainings, training materials, training on skills groups, training on nurture groups, as well as facilitating DBT skills groups, participating in FIT TEAM, and providing other resources for staff. Work involves assisting in establishing structured safety and goals/objectives; adhering to all guidelines, procedures, rules, and regulations; and establishing priorities, standards, and measuring tools for determining progress in meeting operational goals.

Works under minimal supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. May be required to work alternating shifts, work in excess of 40 hours per work week, be on-call, and travel occasionally.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Serves as a trainer, coach, mentor, and role model for Texas Model 2.0 skills with a heavy emphasis on DBT skills and behavior chains. This includes both new hire and on-going trainings.

Works with facility administration to assist in remedial training that may be needed by a JCO and develop an action plan for completion. Reasonable effort made for length of time required for demonstration before corrective action or remedial training is recommended or required.

Facilitate a minimum of four DBT skills groups weekly and also observe and monitor skills groups and nurture groups.

Collaborates with subject matter experts and JJTA management staff in the development, delivery, and evaluation of training programs specifically related to Texas Model 2.0 concepts with an emphasis on DBT.

Coordinates Texas Model 2.0 training schedule with appropriate team and facility leadership or their designee as directed and approved by JJTA management. Works with facility training team to provide Texas Model 2.0 training to new hires, including training for nurture groups and skills group training.

Ensures DBT group facilitators are trained and provides guidance for skills groups, nurture groups, and behavior chains.

Works with facility leadership to provide ongoing OJT and Texas Model 2.0 training in dorm shift meetings, management meetings, and town hall meetings.

Trains staff on how to perform the behavior chain analysis. Reviews and gives feedback on behavior chain analysis.

Reports any presence or perception of racial, ethnic, and gender disparities and recommends actions to address disparities.

Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined, and assigned as needed.

Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures

  • Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible
  • Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames


Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.



Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree. Four (4) years of full-time wage-earning experience providing direct care services for juveniles in a correctional program or a program dealing with at-risk youth.

OR

High School Diploma or equivalent. Eight (8) years of full-time wage-earning experience providing direct care services for juveniles in a correctional program or a program dealing with at- risk youth.

Preferred:

• Four (4) years of progressively responsible full-time wage-earning experience specifically working in a direct care position providing supervision to youth in a TJJD state-operated facility (e.g., juvenile correctional officer, case manager).

• Major course work in criminal justice, social work, education, behavioral science, public administration, business administration, or related field.

• Training or certification in a nationally recognized trauma-informed care system.

Experience and Education Substitutions:

  • Completed course hours of undergraduate study may be substituted for up to four years of experience on a basis of 30 course hours for one year of experience.
  • Pro-rated part-time experience may satisfy the experience requirement.

Requirements for Continued Employment:

  • Obtain and maintain certification as an instructor in TJJD's approved use of force techniques. An employee must obtain such certification or recertification within 60 days of employment in this position if he or she does not have a current certification.
  • Obtain and maintain certification as an instructor in First Aid and CPR. An employee must obtain such certification or recertification within 60 days of employment in this position if he or she does not have a current certification.
  • Obtain and maintain certification as an instructor in oleoresin capsicum (OC) aerosol. An employee must obtain such certification or recertification within 60 days of employment in this position if he or she does not have a current certification.
  • Maintains approved status for sole supervision.


• Failure to maintain required licensure/certification will result in termination of employment.
