GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Plans, organizes, and implements the physical education program at the state school for youth who have been adjudicated delinquent of felony offenses, assigned to a high security correctional facility, and have a wide variety of temperaments and specialized needs. Work involves teaching individual and team sports to the youth; utilizing knowledge of sports techniques and physical capabilities of the youth; promoting development of physical attributes and social skills; organizing, leading, instructing, and refereeing indoor and outdoor games; and administering assessment instruments and accurately scoring and interpreting results.

May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per workweek and be on-call.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Promotes active student participation in the learning process; and provides instruction that challenges students and allows them to make connections to work and life applications. (15%)

Develops instructional content based on appropriate goals and objectives and includes basic knowledge and skills, as well as central themes and concepts; aligns instructional strategies with learning objectives and activities, student needs, and work and life applications; promotes application of learning through critical thinking and problem solving; and engages students in the learning process. (20%)

Aligns assessment and feedback with goals and objectives and instructional strategies; and uses a variety of evaluation and feedback strategies appropriate to the varied characteristics of the students. (10%)

Implements approved discipline management procedures; establishes a classroom environment that promotes and encourages self-discipline and self-directed learning; selects instructional materials that are equitable and acknowledge the varied characteristics of all students; and manages time and materials. (05%)

Uses appropriate and accurate written, verbal, and non-verbal modes of communication with students, parents, staff, community members, and other professionals; and interacts with such individuals in a supportive, courteous, and respectful manner. (15%)

Participates in professional development goals and activities that are aligned with the goals of the school and campus; correlates professional development activities with assigned subject content and the varied needs of students; collaborates with colleagues and other professionals for continuous growth and development; and correlates professional development activities with the prior performance appraisal. (05%)

Contributes to making the whole school safe and orderly and a stimulating environment for youth; and respects the rights of students, parents, colleagues, and the community. (10%)

Diagnoses student needs and provides performance feedback related to all appropriate TEKS/STAAR objectives; aligns the planning and delivery of instruction to all appropriate TEKS/STAAR objectives; collaborates with other faculty and administration to improve STAAR-related performance of all students on the campus; identifies students who are at-risk and develops appropriate strategies to assist these students; and monitors the attendance of all students and intervenes to promote regular attendance. (15%)

Reports any presence or perception of racial, ethnic, and/or gender disparities.

Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.

Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:

  • Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible.
  • Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames.


Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.



Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree.

Required:

  • Valid Secondary Texas Teacher Certification to teach Physical Education. Acceptable certifications include: Physical Education and/or Health and Physical Education.
  • Highly qualified to teach physical education.


Note: Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.

Requirements for Continued Employment:

• Failure to maintain required licenses/certifications will result in termination of employment.
