BRIEF POSITION SUMMARY

The Medical Technician performs complex (journey-level) patient care work for the Texas ChalleNGe Academy (TCA). Work involves monitoring patient conditions and providing assistance to medical staff in administering therapeutic programs. Reports directly to the TCA Program Nurse. Works under general supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides authorized medical services to cadets, to include administering prescribed and authorized over-the counter medications orally.
  • Accompanies and transports cadets to medical appointments at local clinics.
  • Assists in scheduling medical appointments at local clinics when necessary.
  • Provides medical support for a high level of Volunteer Community Service projects that expose cadets to minor injuries and allergy reactions.
  • Monitors and charts cadets' weight, diet, feeding problems, and vital signs.
  • Conducts new hire and cadet urinalysis.
  • Counsels cadets with specific health goals concerning therapeutic regimens, growth and development information, family planning and health and safety awareness.
  • Conducts appropriate screening tests to assess cadets' heath by: interviewing cadets, performing physical evaluations and obtaining and updating cadets' medical history, as necessary.
  • Applies principles and practices to assess, prevent, and control disease.
  • Maintains records pertaining to medication, illnesses, and the transfer of cadets.
  • Prepares cadets for tests, therapy, or treatments.
  • Assists in the preparation of charts and documentation providing nursing and medical summaries.
  • Assists medical staff in examining and caring for patients.
  • Assists with conducting the inventory of medical supplies and instruments.
  • May communicate with essential staff regarding restrictions, limitations and dispensing of medications, as required.
  • Assists the Program Nurse in the screening of program applicants and in the coordination of application packets, parent notifications, and record keeping.
  • Attends relevant training to maintain the essential functions of the position.
  • Observes all program policies and guidelines.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
  • Attends work regularly and observes approved work hours in accordance with agency state employee policies & procedures handbook.
  • May be required to perform duty in support of national emergencies, disasters, and other missions, to include holidays and weekends.




Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent is required.


PREFERRED EDUCATION:

  • Vocational training in a relevant healthcare or medical field is preferred.
  • Associate degree in nursing is preferred.


EXPERIENCE:

  • Three years' experience in healthcare or patient care work is required. (See Substitution)
  • Experience using Microsoft Office (such as Outlook, Word, or Excel) is required.


PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • One year of experience working with emotionally/behaviorally at-risk youth is preferred.


SUBSTITUTION:

  • Required experience can be substituted with Military Experience from a qualified Military Occupational Job Code (See Military Crosswalk for qualified positions). (MUST BE DEMONSTRATED IN APPLICATION TO QUALIFY)


REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION OR LICENSURE

  • Valid permit with State of Texas Health and Human Services as a Certified Medication Aide is required at time of hire and must be maintained throughout employment.
  • Valid driver's license is required. *If not currently a Texas resident, must obtain a Texas Driver's License within 30 days after entering Texas as a new resident. A satisfactory driving record is required for operating state or personal vehicles to conduct agency business.
  • HIPPA, First Aid and CPR certifications or the ability to obtain such certification is required.


OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is security sensitive and employment is contingent upon favorable results of a federal security background investigation. The process includes a National Agency Check and Inquiry (NACI) and fingerprinting. New employees must complete and sign the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Form SF85. Completed forms are submitted to the OPM for the background investigations.
  • The Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 requires all new employees to present proof of eligibility to work in the United States within three (3) days of being hired. The Texas Military Department participates in E-Verify and will provide the Social Security Administration (SSA) and, if necessary, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), with information from each new employee's Form I-9 to confirm work authorization.

PHYSICAL/WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to work a flexible schedule, be able to maintain emotional control under stress, and must be physically fit in order to respond in treating medical emergencies for students and staff members while participating in indoor and outdoor activities. Work involves standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing, crawling and running. Frequently lifts, carries, moves, and sets up equipment and materials that weigh up to 25 pounds.
