At Reality Labs Research (RL-R), our goal is to explore, innovate and design novel interfaces and hardware subsystems for the next generation of virtual, augmented, and mixed reality experiences. We are looking for a skilled and motivated Tooling/Process Engineer to join our research team whose mission is to lead the design, development, and production of new molding tools and parts for low/moderate volume prototypes. We are specifically looking for a candidate with experience in material selection, process optimization, and tool design for overmolding of electronics. This candidate will be able to work with a team of researchers and engineers who are pushing state-of-the-art wearable devices in part design and material development.

Tooling/Process Engineer Responsibilities

  • Provide design for molding feedback and materials recommendations to mechanical engineers to improve the manufacturing feasibility of thermoplastic, thermoset, and metal parts

  • Cultivate and manage tooling and molding suppliers in the design, manufacturing and qualification of tooling and molded parts

  • travel as needed to ensure successful tool launch

  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team in the selection of materials to meet performance, schedule, dimensional and cosmetic requirements

  • Lead the design, development, and production of new silicone/plastic injection mold tooling (including optimization trials and DOEs) to meet strict part and assembled device requirements

  • Liaison with other tooling/process engineers to share expertise and take advantage of industry advancements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience in Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Engineering, Material Science, Manufacturing Engineering or a relevant technical field

  • 5+ years experience with a wide range of molding techniques including multiple of the following: insert molding, 2 shot molding, die casting, transfer molding, liquid silicone molding, and thermoforming

  • Experience managing working relationships with international and domestic suppliers to design and build tooling for high volume, tight tolerance consumer electronics products or similar

  • Experience guiding teams and suppliers through understanding and use of Molding simulations (Moldflow, etc.), SPC, DOE, and GD&T

  • Experience advising designs with a variety of elastomeric thermoplastic (TPU, TPE) and thermoset (silicone, NBR) resins

Preferred Qualifications

  • Multishot molding and insert/overmolding of electronic components

  • Experience identifying disruptive technologies in all phases of tool design, tool manufacturing and part creation, and implementing them into production environments

  • Experience with post molding operations including but not limited to: deflashing, coating, painting, pad printing, laser engraving, adhesive application
