Position Summary
The University at Buffalo's department of Residential Maintenance Services is seeking a candidate to fill a Trades Generalist position. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting the proper functionality and maintenance of the department's equipment, facilities, and machinery.

As Trades Generalist, your responsibilities include:
  • Install, repair, and replace window, door, and flooring systems
  • Troubleshoot, repair, install and maintain residential appliances
  • Perform tasks associated with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems in commercial buildings and residential living spaces
  • Plan and layout construction, repair, and maintenance projects as needed
  • Lead and supervise designated staff members

About the Office of Residential Facilities

The UB Office of Residential Facilities ( UBRF ) reports to the Department of Housing Operations and is a dynamic unit within UB dedicated to delivering the best living and learning environments by designing, building, and operating safe, clean, functional, and sustainable facilities that serve as the bedrock of academic success at UB. Responsible for managing 117 buildings totaling 2.5 million square feet, UBRF serves as the backbone of campus housing, accommodating approximately 8,000 UB students annually.

Departmental Operating Needs
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and procedures as well a knowledge of applicable codes and regulation is important
  • The ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • This position requires traveling within the campus, between the campuses, and off campus, therefore, the candidate must be able to demonstrate their ability to meet this requirement.
  • The incumbent must be able to communicate well with others and possess and demonstrate positive customer service skills.
  • Since the activities of other employees depend on the availability of the employee in this position, reliable attendance is a factor that will be considered when filling this vacancy.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Non-competitive: four years of full-time experience in a trade under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program; or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in skilled trades at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services.
  • Candidates must possess a valid, Class D New York State driver's license.

Physical Demands
  • Routine tasks require light, moderate and/or heavy physical effort.
  • The ability to stand, bend, stoop, sit, twist, and work at elevated heights using ladders and scaffolds for extended periods of time
