The Facilities Management unit of the Division of Facilities is accepting applications for a Trades Specialist 1.

About the Opportunity:

Under the minimal supervision of the Supervisor and Manager, performs duties necessary to complete maintenance, prevention, alterations, and repair work in the Rec Center facility. Provide guidance to other unskilled personnel as assigned.

Work Hours: Monday - Friday 6a-2p

What you'll do:

  • Performs maintenance duties as related to fitness equipment for Student Rec Center and carpentry, such as but not limited to, fabrication and repair of various casework and furniture; installation and repair of various floors and ceilings. Responsible for care and inventory of tools and equipment used in the performance of duties of this position. Maintains an organized work area to include housekeeping, safety and security of materials, tools, and test equipment.
  • Installs interior and exterior walls, partitions, paneling, siding, and plaster wall coverings.
  • Performs general painting duties as related to carpentry tasks, such as cabinets, trim, etc.
  • Performs maintenance duties as related to electrical, such as but not limited to, replacing light switches, ballasts, outlets, sockets, lamping, reset breakers and perform minor repairs to various types of interior and exterior lighting systems and for fitness equipment for the Rec Center
  • Performs a variety of tasks associated with alterations and renovations made to facilities operated by the department. Specific duties include, but are not limited to, insulation or repairs of interior and exterior walls, partitions, metal studding, insulation, drywall, mig wielding, upholstery, wood trim, floor coverings, locks, doors, counters, cabinets, benches, forming and pouring concrete, and building foundations.
  • Will operated tools and machinery to support previously mentioned functions to include hand tools, power tools, scaffolding, rigging, ladders, motorize lift, hydraulic lifts, cutting torches, compressors, grinders, and power activated nail guns.
  • Performs maintenance duties as related to plumbing, such as but not limited to, repair and maintenance of faucets, opening plugged drains, replacing worn or damaged traps, tightening loose packing, repairing flush valves, replacing worn or damaged commode seats, etc.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repair on housekeeping equipment: such as troubleshooting electronic circuit, propane engines, vacuums, rider floor scrubber, walk behind floor scrubbers, carpet extractor walk behind, rider carpet extractor, and slow and high speed buffers. This would include replacement of electrical parts, motors, circuit boards, and pumps.
  • Operates as a First Responder to strange odors, leaks, tripped breakers, plugged drains/commodes, etc.
  • Operates various types of motorized aerial work platforms and truck mounted lifts. Must be knowledgeable of proper assembly and disassembly procedures as well as required safety railings, stabilizers, kick boards, safety harnesses, and fall protection devices. Must ensure that all safety procedures are understood and followed by assigned employees.
  • Requests parts, supplies, etc. from Warehouse and Tool Crib ensuring timely delivery and sequencing to include operating a state vehicle. Maintains clean work area and performs other related duties required by immediate supervisor.
  • May be required to perform general maintenance duties either in relation to normal journeyman responsibilities or assisting other trades such as but not limited to: sheet metal fabrication, millwright work, and grounds and labor duties. May be required to operate computers utilizing various software programs, such as: maintenance management programs involving work orders and materials accountability, building support systems, and other systems as necessary.
  • May be required to move, load, and carry all materials and equipment necessary to complete all phases of assigned maintenance and construction projects. May be required to assist in the effort of moving any existing conditions which interfere with the flow of the project. When project is completed, work site must be left in a clean and orderly fashion. Must be able to respond during off hours to cover emergency situations.
  • This position will request parts and supplies; recommends to supervisor the need for materials and parts; writes specifications and letters of justification as required; completes various forms and maintains records such as preventive maintenance checklists, and order forms. Performs related duties as assigned. This position will require the use of personal computers to interface with the various types of equipment and apparatus, GroupWise E-mail, TMA work order system, Kronos, Microsoft Word, Excel, and inventory control on a daily basis.


Qualifications

  • Must have a high school diploma of GED
  • Must have one of the following:
    • 2 years experience in general trades building maintenance experience in the areas of basic carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or other craft trades.
    • Completion of an associate degree in building maintenance or other craft trade.
    • Completion of a 2 year accredited vocational craft trades program.


  • Valid Driver's License required.
  • Knowledge of electrical systems and components.
  • Ability to perform customer service efficiently and courteously.
  • Ability to read, writes and performs mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Working knowledge of the materials, methods, tools, and equipment such as occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical field to include building maintenance skills.
  • Ability to read and write in English.
  • Demonstrated ability to use and operate all appropriate hand and power tools,
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal building, safety and fire codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints and to sketch schematics.
  • Ability to lay out the needs and methods to complete a job and prioritize work to meeting demanding work schedules and events set-ups with limited advance notice and amount of time to perform such task.
  • Ability to climb ladders at heights exceeding ten feet.
  • Ability to lit, bend, walk, reach, stand, and work in cramped areas for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to frequently lift or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform tasks requiring occasional exposure to dust, fumes, grease, heights, moving parts, noise, and/or outside weather conditions or extreme variations of indoor temperature.
  • Ability to operate a personal or a laptop computer.
  • Excellent hand to eye coordination.
  • Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn department's philosophy to provide a safe and secure environment which enhances the educational experience of student residents.
  • Ability to hear and interpret sounds in the work area and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to distinguish between colors in the workplace.
  • Ability to perform all assigned electrical tasks.
  • Ability to maintain unit attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Ability to do minor repairs on propane motors.
  • Ability to operate wielding equipment such as: Mig welder.
  • Ability to make minor repairs on housekeeping equipment.
