Job Description

JOB TITLE: Bus Driver Trainee CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Site Supervisor PAY GRADE: AX / 180 Days LOCATION: Transportation DATE REVISED: 9/29/2021

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

This position is a limited duration training position in which the incumbent is taught the knowledge and skills necessary to become a district Bus Driver.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Valid Texas Driver's License, and ability to obtain a Texas Commercial Driver's License, Class B, (P) Passenger and(S) School Bus Endorsements within 90 days of hire.
  • 21 Years of age
  • Maintain an acceptable MVR - Motor Vehicle Report, under the Texas school bus driving record evaluation
  • Must pass an annual mental and physical exam required by Texas DPS
  • Must pass an annual physical agility test
  • Must be certified in school bus safety education or be enrolled in a school bus safety education class
  • Must be free of a felony or misdemeanor convictions for a crime involving moral turpitude (conduct that is considered contrary to community standards of justice, honesty, or good morals)
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
  • Attend all school bus driver training as required by trainer or supervisor.
  • Complete Texas CDL exams to obtain Commercial Driver's License Permit.
  • Complete behind-the-wheel instruction and subsequently pass the Texas DPS skills and driving test.
  • Pre-trip bus & emergency equipment inspection before leaving the lot for every bus run/trip, including a proper air brake inspection.
  • Report all accidents, vehicle damage, student injuries, and mechanical failures. Complete all required reports.
  • Participate in headcounts and roll calls as needed and complete required reports.
  • Supervise students while they board the bus, are on the bus, and as they leave the bus. Ensure students are crossing the street under district policy.
  • Communicate with teachers and parents as needed regarding student behavior while on the bus.
  • Maintain/Report student discipline issues according to transportation policy (verbal warnings, phone calls, write-ups).
  • Instruct students on safe riding rules and regulations.
  • Observe all traffic laws and safety regulations for school buses. Report any hazardous conditions along the route.
  • Correct unsafe conditions in the work area that can cause an accident and inform supervisor of any items that cannot be fixed immediately.
  • Operate two-way radio equipment by departmental policy.
  • Work irregular hours as needed.
  • Attend and complete required training programs and maintain all necessary certifications and licenses.
  • Perform any duties that may be assigned by the Directors or Supervisors, up to and including extra runs as needed.
  • Report directly to your assigned Operations Supervisor

  • Ability to egress from the bus and supervise student evacuation from the bus promptly during emergencies
  • Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)
  • Maintain emotional control under stress
Physical Demands
  • Continued sitting, reaching, climbing up and down steps, and repetitive hand and arm motions.
  • Moderate lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds
Environmental Demands
  • Moderate exposure to extreme temperatures and vehicle fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel
  • Work inside, may work outside
  • The State Board for Educator Certification will require all first time applicants for an initial credential to be fingerprinted as part of a national criminal background check. A cost of up to $49. 00 will be charged for fingerprinting.
